Position: Senior Weights and Measures Officer JOB GROUP CPSB 08

Number of Posts: One (1) Post
Terms of Service: Permanent and Pensionable
Basic Salary Scale: As provided for by the Salaries and Remunerations Commission

Duties and responsibilities
1. Testing and stamping of mechanical and electronic weighing and measuring equipment's, and class Il mechanical and electronic scales used for pharmaceutical dispensing and jewellery trade;
2. Testing of fabric and area measuring instrument, and all electronic weighing and measuring equipment;
3. Testing of meters for water, milk, and other liquid fluids and liquefied gas;
4. Compiling data collected on verified equipment at traders’ premises, stamping stations and verification office;
5. Sampling pre-packed goods for qualitative analysis;
5. Supervising and coordinating preparation of weighing and measuring equipment and verification activities during trade fairs and public service exhibitions;
6. Collecting and accounting for Appropriation in Aid (AI-A);
7. Conducting inspections on internal controls of manufacturers and measuring systems including software for data processing of measuring results;
8. Conducting prosecution of offences arising from infringement of the Weights and Measuring Act (Cap 513) the trade descriptions Act (Cap 505) and related regulations;
9. Carrying out inspection on wholesale and retail trading premises on the use of weighing and measuring equipment;
10. Carrying out verification of weighing band measuring equipment used by local authorities and other government institution to ensure accuracy; and,
11. Testing automatic weighing machines, bulk weights and totalizing machines, calibrating prover tanks and maintaining secondary reference standards.

Requirements for Appointment
1. Be a Kenyan Citizen;
2. Served in the grade of Weights and Measures officer I for a minimum period of three years ;
3. Post graduate diploma in legal metrology from Institute of Trade Standards Administration (K);
4. Appointed under section 54 of Weights & Measures Act.cap.513, LOK;
5. Gazetted as an Inspector of Weights & Measures in Kenya gazette;
OR
6. Bachelor degree in any of the following disciplines Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer science, Law, legal metrology, Information technology, instrumentation or engineering (Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics) Microprocessors or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution;
7. Advanced certificate of the Institute of Trade Standards Administration (Kenya);
8. Certificate of membership with the Institute of Trade Standards Administration (Kenya);
9. Certificate in computer applications from recognized institutions; and,
10. Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance.
