Basic Job Summary

The Doctoral Fellow will provide administrative support the Strathmore University Doctoral Academy in delivering its mandate of strengthening doctoral training, research capacity, and scholarly productivity across the University. Working closely with the Associate Director, Doctoral Academy, the role combines programme coordination, administrative support, and data analysis, while providing the Fellow with structured exposure to academic development and doctoral training pathways. The position is aligned with the University’s broader faculty pipeline (Graduate Assistantships, Tutorial and Doctoral Fellowships) supporting early-career scholars who intend to pursue a PhD.

Key Responsibilities

Programme Coordination and Administrative Support

Coordinate and support delivery of Doctoral Academy training activities, including:

  • Research methodology workshops
  • PhD retreats
  • Doctoral colloquia and seminars

Manage logistics for events (scheduling, communication, materials, participant tracking)

Support coordination of mock defenses, training sessions, and workshops

Maintain records of doctoral fellows, including progress monitoring and reporting

Assist in processing documentation (e.g., contracts, funding requests, letters of support)

Data Management and Analysis

Support the collection, cleaning, and analysis of data related to:

  • doctoral student progress
  • training participation and outcomes
  • research outputs and programme impact

Develop dashboards and summary reports to inform decision-making

Assist in analyzing trends in doctoral progression, funding uptake, and research productivity across the university

Support preparation of internal reports and strategic documents

Research and Academic Support

Engage in academic research to ensure attainment of a Doctoral degree

Conduct research in relevant area of expertise, and publish in peer reviewed and reputable journals

Apply for grants through writing proposals for own research and scholarly projects

Attending and disseminating research output in local and international conferences

Provide support to the Doctoral Academy in organising research seminars and scholarly engagement platforms

Assist the Academy in coordinating grant-writing workshops and publication support initiatives

Contribute to background research, literature reviews, and synthesis of insights for programme development

Support collaborations with internal and external partners (e.g., schools, research offices, global programmes)

Strategic and Operational Support

Support implementation of the Doctoral Academy’s strategic initiatives, including (but not limited to):

  • doctoral training programmes
  • supervisor development workshops
  • mentorship and coaching initiatives

Assist in monitoring programme performance against strategic objectives

Provide administrative and analytical support to the Associate Director, Doctoral Academy

Qualifications

Master’s degree in finance, Economics, or a related Social Science field

Registered in, or currently undertaking, a PhD programme

Work Experience Required

Strong organizational and coordination skills

Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines

Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Stata, R, Python, or similar)

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Attention to detail and ability to work independently

Interest in research capacity building and academic development
