JOB DETAILS:
The horticultural Manager is responsible for all aspects of the production and training in horticultural crops . This entails the general management of horticultural crops and training in good agricultural practices such as land preparation, propagation material selection, and plant growing media selection, fertiliser application, planting, watering, agronomy, weed control, crop protection, harvesting, post-harvest handling, transport to packing shed, crop removal, , washing and packing, and loading trucks for markets. The role may also include packing shed maintenance, machinery maintenance and light fabrication and record keeping.

Job Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the daily planning, organisation, supervision and administration of activities on the farm.
• Directs and coordinate, through subordinate supervisory personnel, activities of workers engaged in agricultural crop production
• Directs and coordinates worker activities, such as planting, irrigation, chemical application, harvesting, grading, payroll, and recordkeeping.
• Contracts with farmers or independent owners for raising of crops or for management of crop production.
• Responsible for the selection and production of the horticultural crop both under open fields and protected environment greenhouse/hydroponics farming systems
• Training /instructing and supervising apprentices and farm workers
• Responsible for the general good agricultural practices on the farm
• Responsible for organizing maintenance/repair of farm property, equipment and machinery
• Coordinates growing activities with those of engineering, equipment maintenance, packing houses, and other related departments.
• Analyzes market conditions to determine acreage allocations and prepares planting programs and farm plans.
• Confers with purchasers and arranges for sale of crops.
• Records information, such as production, farm management practices, and parent stock, and prepares financial and operational reports.
• Determines procedural changes in drying, grading, storage, and shipment for greater efficiency and accuracy.
• Analyzes soil to determine type and quantity of fertilizer required for maximum production.
• Inspects equipment to ensure proper functioning.
• Inspects orchards and fields to determine maturity dates of crops or to estimate potential crop damage from weather.
• Plans and directs development and production of hybrid plant varieties with high yield or disease and insect resistant characteristics.
• Purchases machinery, equipment, and supplies, such as tractors, seed, fertilizer, chemicals and planting media etc.
• Hires, discharges, transfers, and promotes workers, enforces safety regulations, and interprets policies.
• Prepares and Evaluates crop budget proposals.
Job Skills:
• Have the necessary planning and organizational skills to achieve targets and carry out Company policies as applicable to this property;
• have the ability to act with tact and diplomacy in motivating and disciplining staff while complying with the requirements of the Employment Relations Act
• promote and project a positive attitude towards the Company and its objectives;
• have a valid driver’s licence. Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Desirable):
• Be receptive to learning new technologies to help improve productivity and profitability of the farm.
• Be able to provide role clarity and ensure teamwork amongst staff;
• Be self-motivated and able to communicate effectively at all levels both within and outside the Company;
Job Qualifications:
• BSc in horticulture or equivalent (as a minimum) or an Agricultural Science/management Bachelor’s Degree, Knowledge,
• Skills & Experience in managing a horticultural farms are Essential and should have a proven ability in the farm management field.
• Post graduate qualifications in commercial agriculture enterprise management especially under protected farming such as greenhouse/shade nets and tunnels farming, or hydroponics will be an added advantage.
• Minimum of 3 years experience managing horticulture production enterprises is desirable.
