Job Summary
Reporting to Project Coordinator, the Communications and Advocacy Assistant will be responsible for management of the project’s communications in line with ChildFund Kenya Country Office (CO) communications strategy. S/he will apply the strategy to position and showcase coherent messages on EVAC project’s core intent, deliverables and outcomes, within context of the country’s programs and advocacy initiatives. The position will be responsible for enhancing ChildFund’s donor’s and project’s visibility and brand recognition. The position supports both external and internal communications of the project.

Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the Communications and Advocacy Assistant (CAA) Safe CLICS will be:

Communication
• Design a comprehensive communication strategy and plan for the EVAC project
• Implement a comprehensive project communication strategy that profiles the impact of the project using written and visual storytelling.
• Develop, implement and maintain the project’s online communication presence using the existing web and social networks.
• Lead new approaches to creating and distributing multi-media content

Advocacy
• Support establishment, strengthening and maintaining strategic partnership and alliances with campaign and advocacy partners
• Participate in planning, designing, and implementing strategies for policy influencing and advocacy on issues concerning child protection and wellbeing in general and OSEAC in particular
• Support management of risks related to campaigns and advocacy work.
• Participate in development of learning and knowledge products in the area of advocacy that meet standards and enable learning and sharing by documenting approaches, project and program designs and lessons, case studies and other knowledge products. Seek and leverage existing knowledge products in order to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
• Undertake any other assigned responsibility related to Advocacy
• Content Creation and Management:
• Create and deliver content - stories, photos, video, quotes, and other information - that will help the project to build and nurture relationships with donors and the general public, globally. Proactively share stories and visual assets with CO and partner staff. Provide high-quality English translations of all story material.
• Storyteller - visual and written. In accordance with the CO content calendar, collect stories, photos and video about the project to show impact and build donor trust as well as engagement.
• Support the CO Senior Specialist- Communications in to write, edit, and oversee the production of publications such as newsletters, annual report, brochures, policy planning reports, etc.
• Support in ensuring that all project-related content deliverables comply with branding guidelines, child safeguarding standards and other controls of the organization.
• Support Program, Business Development and Advocacy teams in creation of project collaterals and other published material.
• Keep the CO communications content contact appraised of project initiatives, successes, events and other items of potential relevance to CO communications, both internal and external.
• Support in managing rapid collection of project-related child-focused quotes, stories, photo and video in the immediate aftermath of emergencies.

Knowledge Management & Learning Support
• Support to develop and/or ensure project teams develop learning and knowledge products that meet standards and enable CO-wide learning and sharing by documenting approaches, project and program designs and lessons, case studies and other knowledge products.

Brand, Visibility/Representation
• Responsible for the project communications, including collateral print materials all toward building the brand.
• Create and deliver project-related content for public messages and branding of the project.
• Support in raising awareness through media of the value and impact of the project.
• Alert Country Office Senior Specialist- Communications to potential reputation risks of the project.
• Support in managing activities, communications, special events, workshops, meetings and conferences.

Alliance Relationship Management
• Proactively and frequently prepare timely updates for the organizational website and/or CO.
• In consultation and collaboration with Senior Specialist- Communications determine creative and innovative ways to address reporting requirements for the CO using the SMART system (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely) and effective storytelling.
• Support in generating compelling marketing collateral to support CO fundraising initiatives.

Internal communications
• Support development and execution of a CO internal communications strategy and plan in partnership with the project team and based on assessment of audiences and needs.
• Support in curating, developing, and editing content for a variety of CO internal communications mediums to promote "One ChildFund", and deliver content across multiple channels and mediums.
• Help select and roll out existing or new internal communications tools (in partnership with Knowledge Management & Learning and IT), and train project staff in effective communications techniques and usage of tools. (if & when relevant).
• Support internal response to crisis situations which affect perception and reputation

Safeguarding
• Remain alert and responsive to any child safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child safeguarding policy and procedures and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with Child fund’s Child Safeguarding Policy.

Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Corporate Communications, Marketing Relations or Community Development.
• 2-4 years of demonstrated work experience in journalism, marketing, public relations, media campaigns, and non-profit communication.
• Proficiency in Policy advocacy, Networking, use of social networking and new media tools.
• A grounded understanding of the children sector
• Experiential engagement in child focused advocacy
• A good understanding of the child protection policy environment in Kenya and beyond.
• Clear grasp of communications strategies and creativity in applying them to raise awareness of ChildFund’ s activities and achievements.
• Analytical skills with knowledge and good understanding of global and national development issues.
• Excellent communications skills, written and oral.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Word and Outlook, as well as desktop and web-based publishing, photo and video editing tools.
• Experience in event organization and promotion experience.
• Experience in content collection through case studies and photography.
• Experience in website content management systems. Ability to express technical concepts in clear, simple language for diverse audiences, including the general public.

Project Description
The CASCADE programme goal is to improve food security and contribute to the reduction of malnutrition of at least 5 million women of reproductive age and children under 5 in Benin, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Mozambique. The consortium is comprised of CARE International and GAIN, two organisations that have extensive experience in tackling malnutrition in the programme countries at multiple levels. The programme has two strategic objectives: it aims to increase access to and consumption of healthy diets, as well as increasing the resilience of households to economic and climate change-related shocks across the six countries, with a focus on women of reproductive age and children. The programme will galvanise government, business, and communities around 5 domains: 1) Policy change and accountability; 2) Re-engineering markets and mobilising private sector; 3) Transforming cultural norms and practices; 4) Taking a gender transformative approach; 5) Systematising data and learning for policy. In Kenya, the programme will focus on the counties of Nakuru, Nyandarua and Nairobi, aligning with GAIN’s A1 programming areas. CASCADE will build on successful projects in Nyandarua by CARE which have successfully implemented FFBSs that integrated gender-transformative interventions.

Job Summary
The purpose of the job is to strengthen CARE’S communications and advocacy work and its ability to engage with and influence global and national policy processes around food and nutrition security through dealing with matters of public information for online and offline audiences to enhance the visibility of CASCADE including drafting, interpretation, dissemination and implementation of a creative approach to major communications and media initiatives in accordance with the overall objectives of CASCADE.

Roles and Responsibilities
Responsibility 1: Lead CASCADE’s Advocacy and Communication’s function -40%
• With support from the Project Manager develop and implement the Advocacy & Communication strategy for the CASCADE Project
• Ensure project and partner staff are aware of and buy-in to the messaging matrix & branding guidelines
• Ensure that high quality and influential project materials and media products are developed and widely disseminated
• Support project in the delivery of high-profile events that are effective in communicating key messages and leveraging societal change
• Lead the process of identifying advocacy & communications needs (especially understanding the extent to which stakeholder mindset change is necessary before change can occur)
• Develop innovative approaches for influencing
• Jointly with MEAL Coordinator develop results measurement and management framework for Advocacy & Communication activities

Responsibility 2: Supporting Reporting and Learning on CASCADE- 35%
• Manage the website Pages’ content based on CASCADE requirements Support in the development of annual workplans, and detailed implementation and monitoring plans.
• Contribute sections on Advocacy & Communications activities to Donor reports; ensuring that 'value for money' is communicated
• Liaise with press & media to represent CASCADE publications and materials
• Serve as the focal point for all communications for the CASCADE project by liaising with stakeholders, county departments, and with other government units, departments and ministries as needed

Responsibility 3:
Linkage and networking with other collaborators - 20%
• Build information networks, oversee maintenance of publicly accessible information materials on the CASCADE plans, and develop outreach activities
• Develops strategic partnerships with key stakeholders and media alliances in the country to enhance visibility and maintain an up-to-date database of the relevant press
• Establish and maintain a good working relationship with other CARE colleagues and project staff, project Partner, County government, MOA, collaborators, other stakeholders and enhance CARE image.
• Liaise with the Relevant County government officials, collaborators, and other stakeholders as appropriate.
• Enhance teamwork and synergy in programming and CAREs activities.

Other Responsibilities as assigned -5%
• Keep up to date with CARE’s emerging strategies and approaches and contribute proactively towards implementation. Take responsibility for ensuring personal safety and security, giving due care and consideration to the impact of personal decisions on the safety and security of others

5. Program Assistant – Communications Department– One Position
The successful candidate will provide administrative support to the Program Officer– Communications, in implementing communication strategies and drafting and editing of media releases and other communications material.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Keep under review the information and communications strategy, corporate identity and branding;
2. In consultation with LSK staff, develop and disseminate advocacy and other publicity materials to promote the image and the work of LSK among its key audiences;
3. Collect and collate information, prepare and oversee production of newsletter, magazine and journals of LSK;
4. Assist in developing mechanisms for strengthening communication with regional law societies, affiliate institutions and partners;
5. Develop media strategies to strengthen the partnership with LSK;

3. Strong design, composition, and typography skills;
4. Ability to work independently on developing designs and graphics;
5. Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud Applications (Specifically Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat); and
6. Experience in using software and tools such as Adobe Sparks, Canva/Stencil, MailChimp, Hootsuite/Sprout social and Google Analytics.
