The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. APHRC conducts policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization and related development issues in sub-Saharan Africa.
APHRC seeks to recruit a Communications Manager to lead the Visibility Unit- the team responsible for the Center’s internal and external communications.

Duties/Responsibilities
The role is responsible for delivering both ad hoc and organized training and technical support in writing, editing, public speaking and presentation, to help highly technical and specialized research professionals improve their ability to effectively reach a variety of lay audiences. The ideal candidate should be able to think creatively, and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. S/he will report to the Director, Policy Engagement and Communications Division.
Internal Communications
• Serve as institutional editor-in-chief, supporting copy and content editing for a variety of products across six research units as well as for Center-wide promotional and visibility products.
• Mentor and guide a team of communications officers.
• Direct in-house training on public speaking and presentations for research staff.
Media Relations
• Lead media outreach including development and implementation of media strategy that includes pitches, field visits and responding to ad hoc media requests.
• Facilitate engagement with media for profiling of the Center’s work through media pitches.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Management and coordination of production operations including efficient use of production equipment, planning, budgeting and development of production schedules. The role also seeks to support Digital and Commercial in pursuing business opportunities.
• Overseeing all aspects of production (set design, choreography, lighting, Camera blocking, performances, cinematography, sound, editing.
• Reviewing rehearsals or recording to ensure compliance standards are met.
• Ensuring the program stays on schedule & deadlines are met.
• Producing Shoots-Assistant directing on set, coordinating, scheduling, managing budgets & timelines.
• Pre-production & Post- production-this is to ensure a program/ idea must be well planned before its executed & how its packaged for consumption.
• Establishing & managing the budget.
• Developing & crafting internal creative needs for social media & website.
• Talent Management-Able to book guests for a program & ensuring they are briefed accordingly.

Qualifications, Work Experience and Skills required

• University Degree or Diploma in TV production/Mass communication.
• Minimum of 5 years working experience in Television & Digital production.
• Creativity and originality
• Communication Skills-Creative producer must be able to manage talent & crew & must ensure that everyone works together successfully.
• Troubleshooting Skills-Creative producer must be able to quickly problem-solve any production or staffing issues that may arise.
