As Humanitarian Advisor, you will lead on the UK’s engagement on humanitarian issues in Kenya. You will have direct responsibility for a) delivery of our humanitarian programme portfolio and b) providing technical expertise on humanitarian policies including on refugees, emergency response, resilience and climate change-related disasters (including the ongoing drought). You will establish and maintain strong relationships with relevant GoK officials and humanitarian partners in Kenya.
You will be a member of the BHC’s Human and Social Development Group which includes an education lead, a health advisor and a programme-delivery hub. You will also have close engagement with other parts of the UK mission in Nairobi, including with people working on climate and environment, security and stability, science and technology. You will report to the G7 Humanitarian, Resilience and Inclusion Lead for whom you will deputise as needed and work closely with our Social Development Advisor.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
• Experience at senior level of management / implementation within an NGO, UN or Red Cross organisation.
• Significant experience in undertaking humanitarian risks assessment and analysis
• Experience of planning and managing humanitarian operations
• Master’s degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification in a relevant technical area.
• Strong demonstration of the competences through relevant experience may substitute for a Masters
• Knowledge and experience gained working in or on Northern Kenya and/or drought prone areas, fragile and conflict affected environments.

Responsibilities
• Liaise with private sector and public sector officials in energy sector
• Ensure compliance with local regulations regarding infrastructure development projects
• Advise on cross border power trade activities and engagement with the regional power pool
• Facilitate adoption of improved foundational energy sector laws and regulations in alignment with countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions and National Adaptation Plans
• Support negotiations and signing of power purchase agreements

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
• Knowledge utilities, IPPs, and public sector stakeholders across East and Central Africa in the energy industry
• Minimum five years’ experience implementing energy programs. Sub-Saharan Africa work experience is preferred
• Excellent analytical abilities, written and oral communications skills
• Fluency in English or local languages required depending on work location
• Demonstrated ability to promptly address ad hoc requests
