JOB DETAILS:
The research officer will initially work with senior team members to develop the specifc set of work and will likely, therefore be responsible for:
Key responsibilities in Community engagement
• Liaising with the community engagement team to develop a stakeholder and community engagement strategy for VIRUTUBISHO study.
• Undertake, monitor and evaluate the community liaison activities of the study
• Develop a guiding document, initiate and manage a community advisory board for the VIRUTUBISHO study.
• Engaging with local stakeholders at community, sub-county and county levels as part of the engagement process and providing support in community entry of the study team
• At community level, organize and participate in meeting with institutional heads, chiefs, community leaders, community representatives, community health volunteers and potential participants to explain the study and its aims, and to discuss potential concerns.
• Develop mechanisms for continued engagement with the study community and a continuous reporting system for engagement activities.
• Feed back any challenges faced with engagement to the study team and facilitate the use of information to refine communication between the study team and the community
• Collect and respond to concerns by the community about the study in collaboration with other CLG members

Key responsibilities in Social science research

• Liase with the lead social scientist to contributing to the development of the social science research implementation plan and refining data collection tools.
• Conducting primary research using qualitative approaches including the use of in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and participatory workshops to elicite views, document experiences and evaluate implementation progress of the VIRUTUBISHO study.
• Qualitative data management, analysis, and report writing.
• Feedback findings from the social science research and use it to refine communication between the study team and
• Taking part in or helping to organize and conduct internal social science methodological workshops, shared learning sessions, and training.
• Participating in seminars and journal clubs and providing peer review of emerging proposals within KWTRP together with other scientists.
• And any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications:
• MSc/MPhil that provides a strong theoretical foundation in social science/health systems / organizational research OR an MSc/MPH with a Nutrition/Public health focus and the use of qualitative research methods
• Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences including Sociology, Anthropology OR health sciences including Nutrition, Nursing, Public health.
• An excellent academic track record as evidenced by grades for undergraduate and post-graduate training
• At least 3 years of health research experience.
• Demonstrable experience of the conduct of prior relevant research such as empirical social science studies that include data analysis and report writing, or equivalent experience
• Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications

Desirable Criteria:

• Evidence of working in a research environment for at least 2 years after completion of MPH / MSc level training
• Evidence of supervising junior research staff and fieldworkers
• Evidence of ability to write peer-reviewed qualitative research publications
• Knowledge of NVivo (qualitative analysis) software will be an added advantage
• Clear interest in social science research in public health
• Prior work in a multidisciplinary team
• Prior evidence of being able to plan and conduct research under minimal supervision
• Prior experience of applying participatory approaches to stakeholders analysis and mapping.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills and prior experience managing junior team members
• Ability to work relatively independently to achieve agreed objectives
• Focus on timely delivery of objectives

Key Responsibilities
• Support the provision of statistical guidance and backstopping to an interdisciplinary team of scientists working on food systems through the full research cycle from design, sample size calculations, sampling, analysis to publication and dissemination.
• Contribute to the development and use of standard operating procedures for data capture and processing for experiments that are widely applied.
• Contribute to developing/validating indicators and indices on the food environment associated with food and nutrition security risk factors.
• Support in-house capacity building in food systems statistical analysis and the use of statistical packages
• Provide statistical knowledge about new methods, tools, and approaches as demanded by food environment and consumer behavior research staff.
• Participate in relevant activities such as project planning and data analysis meetings.
• Provide assistance in the presentation of results including visualization of data.
• Contribute to research data management and scientific article publication.
• Contribute to the creation of a research quality system that sets up processes, protocols, and policies to maintain and improve the quality of research.
• Support in any other related activities as advised by the supervisor.

Qualification and Experience

• Ph.D. or MSc in Social Sciences, i.e. social economics, agricultural economics, or a similar field with a background in statistical analysis and computing in agriculture and nutrition.
• General experience supporting the use of statistical tools and methodologies in research.
• Experience in statistical analysis using “R”, “SPSS”, “SAS”, “Stata”, “GenStat”
• Knowledge of Database Management systems will be an added advantage
• Contribute to creating tools and data collection using mobile and CAPI tools and retrieving data from other databases and systems using API’s and other interoperability protocols
• Contribute to cleaning and synthesizing data to guarantee accuracy and fitness of purpose for use in creating food, agriculture, land, and water systems metrics
• Support in developing, maintaining, and administering well-documented databases that manage interconnected and multidisciplinary research data using different database technologies, and platforms
• Contribute to developing analytics and modeling frameworks using statistical software
• development languages, ideally “Python” or “R”, and complementarily Stata
• Contribute to the development of data visualization applications for displaying and tracking metrics
• English Advanced level (oral and written)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Programme Management, Implementation and Resourcing – 30%
• Ensure that plans and objectives contribute to the broader country programme strategy and particularly on the Governance and Accountability theme, as well as involve collaboration with other programmes.
• Effective, timely and quality delivery of project activities and deliverables.
• Continuously monitoring implementation of the project activities including budget tracking and prepare monthly and periodic reports for sharing with Oxfam management, development partners and stakeholders.
• Budget management oversight.
• Ensure continuous coordination with the MEAL Advisor in implementing the monitoring and evaluation components of projects (for Oxfam and partners) and documenting the lessons learnt for their application, quality assurance and for adjustments to the project where necessary.
• Support in initiating new programme strategies that help achieve impact on the programme activities in close collaboration with Oxfam staff and other stakeholders.
• Work with other Oxfam project/programme staff and partners in developing new programme interventions and fundraising for project or programme financing.
• Perform any other tasks related to the project which maybe advised by the management from time to time.

• Partnership management, coalition building and support – 40%
• Brokering, networking and managing partner relations with project partners, strategic partners, coalitions, networks and County Governments and Assemblies in the project areas.
• Support the partners in delivering the project targets and objectives including MEAL support, monitoring of partner project activities, review of work plans and budgets, facilitating linkages, learning as well as reporting.
• Maintain regular communication and positive relationships with other Oxfam staff, project partners, beneficiaries and stakeholders.
• Ensure and coordinate regular monitoring, quality, review and timely submission of partner narrative and financial reports.
• Ensure compliance of Oxfam and donor requirements on project delivery and reporting by partners.

Research, knowledge generation, campaigns and policy influencing – 25%
• Implementation of specified components of the project under the Fiscal Justice Programme that include influencing tax, debt and fiscal justice, public finance management including budget policies, legislation and decisions for the benefit of target beneficiaries.
• Through technical guidance, to support relevant research, policy analysis, and lobbying on tax policy and practice issues taking into consideration gender, inequality, extractives and active citizenship.
• To support partners on their influencing and campaigning strategies and activities.
• To support the design and implementation of public offline and digital campaigns relevant to the programme.
• To coordinate with the Communications and MEAL advisors on the documentation of the programme and partner information, learning and case stories for programme visibility and fundraising.

This is a new position for Inkomoko and involves leading all the research initiatives of the organization and production of rigorous research insights for public presentation and internal decisions. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in management of multivariable research and collaborations, including with universities, etc.

Specifically, the positions responsibilities include:
Responsibilities

• Define the research strategy and roadmap in alignment with Inkomoko core learning objectives and strategic priorities
• Lead, design and execute qualitative and quantitative studies that address key business questions and determine impact at a systemic level
• Manage and coordinate external research to ensure that research is validated by external partners, and connected to larger research trends and studies
• Write/publish/present research papers at top-line industry conferences and publications to influence collective knowledge and with Inkomoko as a thought leader
• Proactive communications and engagement with cross-functional internal teams so insight is integrated into decision-making at all levels of the organization
• Analyze internal and external data and communication of insights in a clear and concise manner, influencing decisions that impact the direction of the organization
• Developing and implementing processes and systems to improve efficiency and quality of research deliverables as well as opportunities for process improvement. Lead initiatives to drive change

Minimum Qualifications
• 10+ years of relevant experience, including managing multi-country research in East Africa
• Master degree in a related field
• A deeply curious, logical, and methodical researcher, with great communication skills and commitment to our core issues of financial inclusion
• Proven track record of creating, publishing and presenting rigorous research
• Experience with technology to enhance research/manage data in a low-tech environment
• Impeccable integrity and commitment to letting data speak, but also bringing excellent communication skills to share insights with key stakeholders
• Proactive and ability to work independently
• Available to travel frequently across East Africa
