Overview
Duties and Responsibilities
Research Planning

• Contribute towards the identification and implementation of effective and adapted data management and analysis solutions for REACH research in Somalia and Kenya, in line with REACH’s relevant research and data guidelines.
• Support as designated by line manager sampling design, creation, and management of data collection tools (ODK or KoBo), training on data cleaning and management techniques, support for data analysis set up (specifically conducted in the R environment).
• Contribute to draft research ToRs with a specific focus on sampling, data collection tools, the data analysis plan, as well as data management plan;
• Support the development of qualitative and quantitative data collection tools, ensuring requirements of research cycle/assessment are met;
• In coordination with relevant assessment and GIS officer(s), support construction of quantitative sample; Keep track of progress and delays of all assigned tasks throughout the research cycle. Ensure that delays or identified problems are reported by writing and orally in a timely manner.
Research Implementation
• When relevant, support the identification and training of enumerators for primary data collection.
• When relevant, support oversight of data collection, in line with agreed TORs (including their Annexes), including data cleaning processes, checks and data cleaning scripts.
• In coordination with relevant assessment officer(s), document all changes in data collection that lead to a modification in the agreed TORs, ensuring that the relevant management are informed and agree on the modifications.
Data Management, Cleaning and Analysis
• Monitor accuracy of data collected in line with IMPACT’s Data Cleaning Minimum Standards Checklist.
• Cross check data collected in the field, ensure regular updates, and solve eventual discrepancies.
• Maintain, update, and expand R-based systems of data management and analysis for data dissemination and reporting.
• Support statistical analysis and quantitative reporting on assessments.
Drafting of Products
• Ensure that all REACH analysis products meet the requirements of REACH and concerned partners.
• In support of the Research Manager or CC, as requested, provide regular communication with IMPACT HQ on progress and deadlines for analysis outputs
• Ensure the drafting of timely and accurate data and analysis products (such as factsheets, graphics, web maps, dashboards), which comply with IMPACT’s guidelines.
• Ensure findings are accurately reported given the data collection and analysis methodology planned in TORs.
• Ensure that all analysis outputs are validated by IMPACT HQ before external release.
Knowledge sharing and learning processes
• Provide content and contributes to lessons learned exercises
Capacity building
• In coordination with line manager, conduct induction for new staff members, including training in basic technical data processing and analysis competencies
• Support the REACH GIS Manager in the development and implementation of capacity training plans for data and other team members within the Horn of Africa.
• Be available to provide regular support and technical backstopping to all teams and units within the country office.
Internal Coordination
• Actively participate in regular team meetings.
• Ensure regular coordination and exchange with relevant colleagues.
• Engage in the development and implementation of IMPACT’s strategy in Somalia and Kenya.
External representation****
• Promote an active use of datasets and research findings by partners and the broader humanitarian community for their decision making
• After validation by line manager, present research findings to relevant third parties in orders to enhance their use and impact;
• Ensure that all partner engagement and all external relations are clearly documented and communicated with the line manager and relevant colleagues
• More generally, contribute to the creation of a positive image and overall credibility of the organization, notably through the application of IMPACT’s mandate, ethics values and standpoint with regard to the actors.
Data Confidentiality and Protection
• The Data Officer will maintain the strictest confidentiality on all data collected and related processes, ensuring full compliance with IMPACT’s data protection policy and SOPs. He/she will actively take measures to prevent the unauthorized sharing of any information and data belonging to IMPACT and its partners or collected during his/her assignment with REACH.
Protection Mainstreaming- Promoting of and adhering to Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse policy and guidelines

Experience and qualification
• Masters’ degree in a relevant discipline (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Management Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, etc.). Or, Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline with relevant work experience;
• 5 years of experience in Data Science, Statistics, programming or GIS, preferably in a humanitarian context;
• Excellent analytical skills;
• Proficient knowledge of R programming language, Python, and other relevant data management software
• Experience with cleaning and analysing large datasets required;
• Strong skills in Excel required;
• Good understanding of various sampling frameworks;
• Ability to operate in a cross-cultural environment requiring flexibility;
• Ability to work independently and remotely;
• Written and spoken fluency in English required;
• Experience with GIS applications such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, OpenStreet Map, and/or Tableau is an added advantage
• Experience with Kobo, ODK or similar mobile data collection tools.

Job Purpose:
• This is a one-year position which focuses on decolonization in global health research. The postholder will join an African-centred multidisciplinary network of academics, practitioners, and activists with a shared interest in unpacking and analyzing decolonization debates in health research.
• The postholder will track the diverse perspectives in the literature and initiatives being implemented in the health research field; and examine emerging and pertinent elements of decolonization debates with the broad aim of contributing to a research and action agenda for positive practice. The precise activities will be co-developed with the team but will likely include mapping out the health research architecture and how (de)colonization features, examining the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders and their values, and highlighting challenges and opportunities for positive transformation.
• The postholder will benefit from continuous engagement with experienced team members through reflection, learning, and sharing of ideas to enrich the research outputs. There will be opportunities for cross-learning and drawing on related fields to inform decolonization debates including bioethics, health policy and systems research (HPSR), and health research capacity strengthening (HRCS). The postholder will have the opportunity to develop their research interests in relation to the broader decolonization agenda. In addition, the postholder will be expected to develop research and dissemination outputs, engage and share learning with relevant networks, and lead activities that will identify and highlight innovative approaches and initiatives which demonstrate positive health research practice.

Key Responsibilities:
• Development and implementation of research activities
• Contribute to the development of the network’s research focus of decolonization in global health research through participating in an evolving process of learning, reflection, and network discussions
• Identify relevant research questions emerging from reflections and discussions, and lead the implementation of research activities including:
• Conducting literature reviews and synthesising learning from the reviews
• Conducting empirical research on the agreed upon foci areas in decolonising health research
• Develop co-authored academic outputs including review papers and commentaries

Dissemination and engagement
• Develop a range of academic and non-academic outputs including manuscripts, reports, and policy/practice briefs
• Coordinate the planning and implementation of the Decolonisation in Global Health network’s dissemination activities including publications, presentations at scientific meetings, themed discussions, engagement with other networks and output users, and social media platforms
• Contribute to building strategic collaborations that will advance the network’s agenda
• Maintain and facilitate team members’ access to a catalogue of relevant resources (papers, blogs, conference proceedings) that could be drawn on in the network’s deliberations

• Co-lead a small grants scheme to develop advocacy pieces that highlight positive practices of decolonization in health research
• Coordinate the design and advertisement of the small grants scheme
• Coordinate the review of applications and award of small grants
• Oversee implementation of the awards and the review and dissemination of the small grant outputs.

Qualifications:
• A PhD in a relevant subject such as social science, humanities, international relations, and anthropology with a health focus: ethics, health policy and systems, global health and public health
• A minimum of four years post-doctoral experience
• Demonstrated experience in independently conducting high quality health-related social science research in low-and-middle-income countries
• Research experience with a track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
• Involvement in grant writing and raising research funds

Overview
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. APHRC conducts policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization and related development issues in sub-Saharan Africa.
APHRC seeks to recruit a Research Officer to work in the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Unit within the Human Development Theme.

Duties/Responsibilities
• Manage the routine activities of an ECD project such as leading the development of field and training manuals, obtaining ethical approvals and research permits, training and supervision of field workers, and data management and scientific writing;
• Contribute to proposal development to strengthen scientific knowledge in ECD or related fields;
• Coordinate policy engagement and dissemination of project research findings to appropriate audiences; and
• Take lead in preparing progress and end-of-grant reports to donors.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
• Master’s degree in ECD or closely related field.
• At least three years’ post-Masters’ qualification experience in a research setting.
• Good writing skills on relevant subject areas.
• Demonstrated experience in working with young children, with a focus on the early years.
• Proven experience in conducting household surveys, school-based and/or health facility-based surveys.
• Strong quantitative skills (managing, analyzing and interpreting data), with extensive familiarity with statistical packages (Stata, SAS or SPSS).
• Computer literacy in Microsoft packages (MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Excel).
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Ability to work within a culturally diverse team.

Desirable
• PhD candidate in ECD or closely related field.
• Experience working outside Kenya.
• Experience and familiarity with diverse health and social science datasets.
• Expertise in qualitative methods, specifically, familiarity with common qualitative analysis software packages (e.g. NVivo).
• Experience in developing proposals and attracting research grants.
• Publication record in peer-reviewed journals focusing on ECD or related fields.
