Background
Tatu is a project of Rendeavour, Africa’s largest urban land developer with over 30,000 acres of visionary projects in the growth trajectories of large cities in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo. Rendeavour’s vision goes beyond alleviating what is a self-evident problem - that of stifling urban congestion and a dearth of quality housing and commercial property in Africa. Rather, we aim to help create the infrastructure - the living and working spaces, communities, schools and hospitals - that will help sustain and accelerate Africa’s economic growth, meet the aspirations of Africa’s burgeoning middle classes, and serve as a catalyst for further urban development.
The Automation Technician is a key member of the Utilities team, responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and optimization of automation systems supporting Tatu City’s water supply and wastewater infrastructure.
The role requires strong technical capability in PLCs, HMIs, control systems, and smart metering technologies to ensure system reliability, operational efficiency, and service continuity. The successful candidate will support day-to-day operations, diagnose system faults, and implement practical engineering solutions to enhance performance within a rapidly growing urban environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and commission automation systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair faults in automated equipment and control systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance and calibration.
- Work with engineers to design and improve automation processes.
- Test and validate system functionality.
- Implement assigned site activities in line with designs, technical standards, and schedules, and keep accurate site and as-built records.
- Prepare and review tender documents, technical specifications, quantities, and support bid evaluations and contract follow-up.
- Maintain and update asset registers, maintenance logs, and other technical documentation for effective asset management and audits.
- Ensure adherence to relevant regulations, safety procedures, and environmental standards, and actively promote safe working practices.
- Connect water meters to smart electricity meters enabling smart functionality for water metering
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues with smart meters, water meter connections, and related communication equipment.
- Manage and monitor the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) platform
- Perform routine maintenance to ensure optimal performance of smart meter systems and water meter connections
- Conduct on-site verifications to resolve discrepancies in meter readings
- Investigate and report potential meter tampering or utility theft
- Manage inventory of meters and related metering material and equipment
- Collect and report data to support network optimization efforts for the integrated metering system.
Requirements
- Diploma / Degree in Electrical Engineering/Electronics Engineering, Automation or related field from a recognized institution.
- Must have at least three (3) years’ experience in the design, operation, and maintenance of industrial automation systems, with demonstrated proficiency in PLCs, HMIs, and control systems.
- Problem solving skills and attention to detail
- Membership with relevant bodies will be an added advantage.
