Main responsibilities

The Communications Lead will be responsible for the following:

  • Communications Strategy & Oversight
  • You will lead the development and delivery of Lion Landscapes’ organisation-wide communications strategy. This includes setting clear direction for messaging and ensuring a consistent tone and brand identity across all platforms. You will also guide the development of compelling organisational narratives, impact reporting, and campaigns that align with our mission and resonate with diverse audiences. This includes tailoring messaging to key stakeholder groups - including funders, local communities, conservation partners, media, and policymakers - ensuring that content is appropriately targeted and effective.
  • Narrative Development & External Communications
  • You will take the lead in developing compelling, evidence-based narratives for grant applications and donor reports. Working closely with the Senior Fundraising Lead, you will translate programme insights and data into persuasive, accessible content that clearly and accurately outlines progress made towards any commitments stated in the grant proposal, reflects the Lion Landscapes’ ethos and meets donor communication standards.
  • You will oversee all external communications, which includes but is not limited to newsletters, blog posts, website updates, and social media content, ensuring everything is timely, accurate, and strategically aligned. You may also be expected to contribute original content, including feature articles, campaign messaging, or donor stories, particularly for priority audiences and time-sensitive needs.
  • You will act as a media spokesperson when needed and work closely with the CEOs on public events, press statements, and media appearances. A key aspect of your role will be identifying opportunities to elevate Lion Landscapes’ public profile and expand its reach. You will also manage communications in sensitive or crisis situations, in consultation with leadership, to ensure appropriate and timely responses.
  • Internal Coordination & Content Flow
  • As the central hub for all things communications, you will manage incoming requests and oversee the internal flow of content. Using tools such as Basecamp, you will track tasks, maintain the content calendar, and ensure regular, timely updates from teams across the organisation. Your coordination will ensure that storytelling is relevant, timely and closely-aligned with programme activities.
  • Line Management & Team Support
  • You will line-manage the Digital Communications Assistant, providing clear direction, setting objectives, reviewing outputs, and supporting their professional growth through regular feedback and development opportunities.
  • Monitoring, Reporting & Learning
  • You will track the performance of communication efforts across platforms. Using this data, you will recommend improvements to content delivery, audience engagement, and storytelling effectiveness, creating a learning culture that strengthens Lion Landscapes’ overall communications approach.

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or media, ideally within a nonprofit, conservation, or international development context.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with a strong ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences and platforms.
  • Proven experience developing and delivering communication strategies that drive audience engagement and strengthen organisational visibility.
  • Experience in managing media relations, including drafting press releases, handling media enquiries, and representing the organisation publicly at events, media appearances, and high-level partnerships.
  • Strong interpersonal and project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and work collaboratively across teams and departments.
  • Experience with communications analytics and reporting to measure impact and inform strategy is desirable.
  • Familiarity with communications for fundraising, including donor reporting and grant narratives, is a strong advantage.
  • Understanding of or commitment to conservation, community-centred development, and equitable storytelling approaches.
