Job Purpose:

Providing excellent holistic nursing care to the emergency patients and their families as per laid down policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

General Expectations

Providing excellent holistic nursing care to the emergency patients as noted below.

  • Always greeting patients/family, welcoming them, and introduce self to patients.
  • Mandatory orientation of all patients/kin on admission
  • Effective and timely nursing handoffs at the patient bedside accurate documentation of all charts, checklists, forms, and relevant care bundles performing pressure area care for patients at risk including regular turning the kin or relatives are updated daily about their patient condition and progress. timely medications administration and safety compliance communication and giving patient education to patients/families on assessed needs. ensure all patients belongings are handled in a safe manner according to policy. listening to any patients/family complaints and ensuring they are addressed promptly.
  • Capturing of all patients’ charges on the system on a timely basis.

Technical Issues: These involve clinical, hands-on skills that require specific nursing competencies: Emergency nurse will,

  • Collect current symptoms and detailed patient history to inform diagnosis and care planning.
  • Perform triage, considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
  • Manages Basic Life Support (BLS) needs and stabilizes patients as per nursing standards and protocols.
  • Initiate corrective action when monitoring equipment shows adverse signs.
  • Record and monitors patients’ vital signs and respond to changes.
  • Assist physicians during exams, diagnostic tests, and treatments.
  • Prepare and administers prescribed medications, including IV infusions, as per policy.
  • Report adverse reactions to medications or treatments.
  • Clean and bandage wounds for trauma patients.
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic imaging (X-rays, CT, etc.) and accompany when required.
  • Manage post-resuscitation care, including monitoring and referrals.
  • Coordinate interdepartmental transfers or referrals for specialized care.
  • Track and restock emergency supplies and crash cart materials.
  • Ensure availability and functionality of critical emergency equipment.
  • Participate in mock drills (fire, disaster, mass casualty simulations).
  • Respond to emergency alerts (e.g., Code Blue, Rapid Response).
  • Perform comprehensive initial assessments, including physical exams and re-assessments per shift or clinical need.
  • Initiate and implement patient education plans, including discharge of education on self-care, medications, follow-up, etc.
  • Provides accurate clinical documentation and maintains patient treatment records.

Operational Duties: These relate to coordination, safety, communication, compliance, and workflow in the emergency unit: Emergency nurse,

  • Consults and coordinates with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care plans.
  • Ensures all patients and families are oriented to the ward upon admission.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Maintains infection control practices for staff and patient safety.
  • Reports complaints and incidents promptly to departmental leads.
  • Participates in hospital activities like research, audits, CSR, open days.
  • Utilizes available resources effectively to support quality service delivery, cost containment, and profitability.
  • Champions continuous quality improvement, including timely incident reporting.
  • Upholds statutory regulations as required by Kenyan nursing and health laws.
  • Safeguards hospital and patient confidentiality and property.
  • Supports orientation and mentorship of new staff or students in the department.
  • Escalates critical clinical situations to senior nurses or physicians appropriately.

Qualifications

Education

  • KRN, KRM, KRCHN, BSc. Nursing
  • Higher Diploma in Accident & Emergency Nursing

Professional Qualification

  • Updated BLS/ACLS certificate

Membership

  • Current annual nurse practice license issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.

Job Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience post registration by the Nursing Council.
