Job Description
- Human Resources Manager – Handcrafted Leather Goods Brand
- Our client, a well-established brand known for its handcrafted leather bags and footwear, is seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to support the operations of its manufacturing plant and retail outlets.
- The HR Manager will play a critical role in recruiting, developing, managing, and retaining a productive workforce. This role requires someone who can ensure compliance with Kenyan labor laws, foster a positive work culture, and align HR strategies with the company’s production and business goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and update all HR policies and ensure they are properly implemented across the organization.
- Lead staff sensitization efforts to ensure company-wide understanding and adherence to HR policies, including among senior management.
- Develop and implement a department-specific onboarding checklist for new hires to ensure a smooth integration into their roles.
- Set up and maintain a clear performance management framework, including annual performance reviews and merit-based salary increments every two years.
- Conduct monthly performance appraisals for administrative staff and present summary reports to the CEO.
- Ensure that all employees have valid, up-to-date contracts that clearly outline job descriptions and/or performance targets.
- Recruit and train an HR Assistant to handle day-to-day HR documentation and provide operational support.
- Collaborate with the CEO and department heads to identify and fill vacant positions, as well as assess staffing needs.
- Gain a strong understanding of factory and production processes and support employees in meeting their performance targets.
- Prepare and present weekly HR reports to management, highlighting key updates and metrics.
- Utilize the HR software (Wagemaster) for tracking attendance and develop solutions to address issues of non-compliance.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in HR management, with direct oversight of at least 100 employees.
- At least 3 years of experience working in a manufacturing or factory setting is essential.
- Demonstrated ability to manage large teams (200+ employees), preferably within unionized environments.
- Strong knowledge of Kenyan labor laws, health and safety regulations, and statutory compliance including NHIF, NSSF, and PAYE.
- Proven expertise in recruitment, employee relations, disciplinary procedures, and performance management.
- Experience in managing payroll processes, either directly or in coordination with the finance team.
- Skilled in conflict resolution and negotiation, particularly in unionized settings.
- Good working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards.
- Strong organizational, record-keeping, and administrative capabilities.
- Proficiency in HR Information Systems (HRIS), Microsoft Office tools—especially Excel—and basic data reporting.
