Responsibilities or duties
Duties and Responsibilities entail
Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail:-
- Ensuring the vessel (boat/craft) is maintained to seaworthy conditions as per SOLAS;
- Organizing for the safe stowage (anchorage, berthing or mooring) of the vessel;
- Navigating the craft safely within the prescribed area as per COLREG;
- Operating the machinery and equipment onboard safely as per SOLAS;
- Ensuring that the craft's statutory documents/records are updated;
- Ensuring timely maintenance of the craft's life-saving equipment;
- Ensuring safety of crew, passengers and the craft;
- Maintaining the vessel log books;
- Supervising the maintenance and service of the boat navigation equipment;
- Overseeing the maintenance and service the boat's propulsion machinery;
- Maintaining and updating all the maintenance and repair work records;
- Requisitioning bunkers, oils and other stores;
- Managing records on the expenditure of bunkers and stores;
- Overseeing the vessel's inventory for machinery and other materials is updated;
- Strictly observe and adhere to anti-pollution policy as per IMO.Reg.Marpol.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Required Qualification
For appointment to this grade, a staff must have: -
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Grade D or its equivalent;
- Coxswain I Certificate in accordance with Merchant Shipping Act and its regulations;
- Basic Safety Training Course (STCW);
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than fast Rescue Boats);
- Proficiency in computer applications.
Experience needed
Cumulative six (6) years relevant work experience three (3) of which should have been at the level of Coxswain I or a comparable position;
Cumulative Service period of six (6) years relevant work experience three (3) of which should have been at the level of Coxswain II or a comparable position;
