Hand in Hand Eastern Africa (HiH EA) is a registered NGO in Kenya and Tanzania and is part of the Hand in Hand global network. The organization started operations in Kenya in October 2010 and is currently operating in 26 Field offices within 33 out of 47 Counties in Kenya. HiH EA has so far mobilized, trained and is training over 354,858 members (80% women, 40% youth) who have created over 334,179 enterprises (30% eco-enterprises) and over 452,272 jobs on the Kenyan Programme.
The organization works with marginalized communities in the areas of economic and social empowerment using a participatory approach aimed at helping people fight poverty and vulnerability. The Hand in Hand enterprise and job creation approach is based on a philosophy of self-help, providing training, skills and support to enable people living in poverty, particularly women, to build and sustain independent, market-based, economic activities. This provides for a higher level of income for them and their families, which in turn contributes to greater food security, better education for children, increased access to healthcare, improved housing and overall improved livelihoods. SUMMARY ADULT LITERACY TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS.
REF.NO: HEA ADL-01/2025 (2) POST
Teaches adults reading and writing skills, prepares and delivers lessons, mobilizes and trains learner groups, and integrates real-world, participatory methods. Ensures program awareness, recruits learners, provides feedback, prepares reports, collaborates with coordinators and partners, and complies with HiH EA policies and assigned duties.
Responsibilities or duties
- Create general awareness of Hand in Hand activities in areas of operation through outreach and promotion.
- Select, identify and recruit potential adult literacy groups/members in accordance with the established operation policy.
- Prepare and execute schemes of work and lesson plans according to the project requirements.
- Mobilize members, attend and conduct training during adult literacy group meetings.
- Prepare monthly, semi-annual and annual reports on the Adult literacy component of the project.
- Integrate competencies, goals and objectives into lesson plans.
- Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.
- Promote active classroom participation.
- Provide students with suggestions and feedback.
- Use interactive and participatory methods to empower adult literacy groups/members.
- Ensure compliance with HiH EA policies and procedures.
- Undertake any other official assignment issued by the supervisor.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
- Certificate in Adult Education training or equivalent from a government registered institution.
- Should have basic adult education level I, II and III in the national curriculum.
- Knowledge and understanding of the specific deployment area (county) and culture within the community.
- Availability and readiness for full time engagement.
- Fluency in the appropriate local language along with English and Kiswahili.
- Must have a proven track record of good performance.
Experience needed
- At least three (3) year experience in training of adults.
