Key Responsibilities
Site Operations Supervision
- Supervise daily landfill operations including waste reception, weighbridge processing, waste tipping, cell placement, compaction, and daily cover application under the direction of the Landfill Manager
- Assign daily tasks to equipment operators, general workers, and weighbridge attendants; monitor attendance, performance, and productivity
- Ensure the active working face is managed safely and in compliance with the site environmental permit and operational plan
- Coordinate vehicle and equipment movements on site to minimise congestion and safety hazards
- Enforce correct waste segregation and disposal procedures for all incoming waste streams
- Act as on-site supervisor in the absence of the Landfill Manager, making operational decisions and escalating issues as required
Environmental Compliance & Monitoring
- Monitor leachate collection systems, drainage channels, and surface water controls daily; report any blockages, overflows, or anomalies to the Landfill Manager
- Carry out routine environmental monitoring checks including odour, litter, vermin, and site boundary conditions; initiate corrective actions
- Ensure daily cover is applied to all active tipping areas at the end of each operational day
- Assist with landfill gas monitoring and report any readings outside normal parameters
- Maintain environmental monitoring logs and assist in the preparation of regulatory compliance records
Health, Safety & Security
- Enforce all site health, safety, and security rules including PPE use, site speed limits, restricted area access, and safe working procedures
- Conduct daily site safety inspections and pre-shift toolbox talks
- Report all accidents, incidents, and near-misses to the Landfill Manager immediately and assist with incident investigation
- Ensure site security arrangements are maintained including gate control, unauthorised access prevention, and contractor supervision
- Ensure fire prevention and emergency response procedures are understood and followed by all site staff
Plant & Equipment Coordination
- Coordinate the deployment of site plant (compactors, bulldozers, excavators, bowsers) to operational areas as directed by the Landfill Manager
- Carry out pre-shift plant inspections alongside equipment operators and report defects to the Workshop/Fleet team
- Monitor plant fuel consumption and log usage; report fuel discrepancies
- Assist in coordinating planned maintenance schedules to minimise disruption to site operations
Record-Keeping & Reporting
- Maintain accurate daily operational records including waste tonnage, vehicle counts, equipment hours, fuel usage, and staffing records
- Compile daily site reports and submit to the Landfill Manager
- Assist in the preparation of weekly and monthly operational and environmental reports
- Ensure weighbridge records are accurately maintained and reconciled with daily waste intake data
Community & Stakeholder Liaison
- Handle waste depositors’ queries and complaints professionally on site; escalate unresolved issues to the Landfill Manager
- Support community liaison activities and ensure site operations minimise disturbance to neighbouring areas
- Assist during regulatory inspections and site visits by NEMA or county government officials
Any other duties as assigned by the business
Qualifications
- Diploma or Certificate in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Waste Management, or a related technical discipline
- A Certificate of Technical Competence in Landfill Operations (CoTC) or equivalent is an advantage
- Valid driving licence (BCE class preferred) and ability to operate or supervise heavy site plant
Experience
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in landfill, waste management, quarrying, earthworks, or a similar site operations environment
- At least 2 years in a supervisory or team leadership role on an operational site
- Hands-on experience with landfill operations including compaction, cell management, and leachate/environmental monitoring is strongly preferred
- Experience operating or supervising heavy plant (bulldozers, compactors, excavators) is an advantage
Technical Skills
- Working knowledge of landfill operations, environmental permit requirements, and NEMA compliance obligations
- Ability to read and interpret site plans, cell maps, and operational work orders
- Basic computer literacy for report writing and data entry (MS Office or equivalent)
- Familiarity with weighbridge management systems is an advantage
Core Competencies
- Strong on-site leadership and team supervision skills
- High commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards
- Good communication skills with the ability to give clear instructions to a diverse site workforce
