Responsibilities or duties
As Business Development Lead, you will enable Welthungerhilfe (WHH) to realize its sustainable Global Growth ambition by managing the end-to-end capture of high-value funding opportunities (“Big Bids”) that are closely aligned with WHH’s identity, strategy, and capabilities.
The focus of the role is on driving the successful capture of strategically relevant Big Bids and strengthening WHH’s ability to secure high-value funding opportunities. Success in this role will be reflected in your contribution to WHH’s strategy, your ability to successfully capture Big Bids aligned with WHH’s values, brand, strategy, and capabilities, and in strengthening the organization’s readiness to grow its overall impact, influence, innovation, and investment readiness as One WHH.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Proven success in end-to-end business development for high-value funding opportunities; management or leadership experience in business development is a strong asset
Demonstrated competence in pitching, leadership, strategic thinking, creativity, analytical thinking, collaboration and communication
A strong understanding of sector trends, innovations and key actors in nutrition, climate, food, WASH and humanitarian systems
Excellent understanding of funding and investment dynamics, including Official Development Assistance (ODA), Other Official Flows, public and private investment and philanthropic giving, as well as the strategies, organizational dynamics and funding developments of key actors
A demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic and complex multi-stakeholder environment
You recognize the growing value of data in your field and are eager to build your awareness and skills to incorporate data-informed approaches into your work
Excellent English language skills; good French language skills are a strong asset
Experience needed
Previous experience working in low-income, fragile and conflict-affected settings and in securing and/or managing high-value programs or ventures is an asset

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with a contract duration of two years. At the end of the initial two-year contractual period, there are good prospects for extension. The position can be filled on either a 50% part-time or 100% full-time basis.
The position can be based in any of the following confirmed locations: Kenya, Ethiopia, Switzerland, United Kingdom,United States, Germany. Additional duty locations within the EU may be considered, subject to local employment possibilities. Employment will be subject to the national terms and conditions and salary structure applicable at the respective duty station.

- Develop and implement the operational vision and strategy for the capture of high-value funding opportunities (“Big Bids”)
- Lead the end-to-end capture of Big Bids, from ecosystem engagement, positioning and opportunity identification through concept development and submission to post-submission handover
- Coordinate cross-functional teams across WHH and with partners to turn promising ideas and funding opportunities into successful bids
- Take a hands-on role as lead writer for promising Big Bids, working with relevant experts to develop compelling opportunity cases, pitches and proposals
- Develop clear value propositions, strong win themes and differentiated positioning aligned with WHH’s identity, brand, strategy and capabilities
- Strengthen the capacity of business developers across WHH to build an innovative, influential and impactful portfolio supported by diversified global funding
- Monitor and continuously improve capture rates, acquisition and business development performance through relevant metrics, after-action reviews and adaptive management
- Identify and anticipate future pathways for international cooperation in food systems, WASH systems, humanitarian systems, climate resilience and nutrition, and translate these into compelling value propositions
- Contribute to strengthening WHH’s role as a thought and practice leader for the future of international cooperation and to advancing its sustainable Global Growth ambition
