Responsibilities:

  • Lead the team in development, implementation and monitoring of oncology unit based clinical policies and procedures
  • Take lead in identification, definition and monitoring of unit based clinical indicators including chemotherapy administration specific indicators.
  • Participate in development and evaluation of nursing documents related to oncology to ensure their appropriateness in capturing patient information.
  • Assist the nurse manager and lead physician to initiate innovative and evidence-based strategies to improve patient care in all aspects of oncology nursing.
  • Participate in the development of a culture of safe practice in collaboration with clinical teams and actively participate in multidisciplinary clinical rounds.
  • Participate in evaluation of care and outcomes through Mortality and Morbidity discussions, clinical incidence trends and clinical indicators
  • Participate in the establishment of oncology standards of care with unit staff and monitor delivery of care according to established standards.
  • Together with the Nurse Manager, conduct regular evaluation of nurses and designs individual development plans based on identified learning/training needs
  • Is responsible for staff files and all learning material at unit level
  • In collaboration with the Manager NES, fosters the development of nurses to maximum potential through providing educational/training opportunities and exposure to appropriate learning forums.
  • Make daily rounds of all patients receiving chemotherapy in the unit and in other medical surgical units, assessing their health status to identify care needs and guides appropriately.
  • Review patient allocation to determine correct patient assignment according to the nurse’s competence and patient’s needs.
  • Assist the nurses at bedside in patient assessment to identify individual patient needs for patients receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
  • Assist nurses to plan and implement individual interventions for oncology patients based on identified patient needs
  • Ensure Chemotherapy administration safety by ensuring that all nurses understand chemo safety measures.
  • Responsible for continuing education/training, and orientation and settling of new nurses assigned in the unit
  • Work closely with nurses at bedside and conducts regular skill checks to identify their training/learning needs, and designs individual training programs
  • Designs a plan for continuing unit-based learning and works with the nurse manager to ensure participation of all nurses
  • Takes lead in unit based Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) projects, Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC), and ensure participation by nurses.

Requirements:

  • Registered nurse with a BSc-Nursing degree
  • Bachelor’s Degree or diploma in Oncology nursing is preferred
  • Current licensure with the Kenya Nursing Council
  • Certification in BLSS
  • Minimum 5 years continuous nursing experience in acute care hospital, preferably in oncology unit
  • Possess teaching abilities, leadership qualities, professional judgment, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and a sense of professional development
  • Demonstrate evidence-based knowledge of current practices in nursing
