Role Summary

The role holder is directly responsible for the strategic management, optimal performance, security, and availability of databases within the Bank. Overseeing the full lifecycle of databases—including installation, configuration, maintenance, and upgrades across platforms such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Big Data, and Data Lakes—the Deputy Manager ensures high system health, performance tuning, robust security access, and resilient backup/recovery strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Technical Direction: Supervise Database Administration Analysts, act as a Technical Lead to enforce best practices and standards, champion modern data management techniques, and lead the automation of patch deployments using Shell Scripting, PowerShell, Ansible, or Terraform.

System Design & Implementation: Collaborate with infrastructure, application, and cybersecurity teams to design and deploy systems aligned with the Bank’s objectives, executing tactical service improvements, upgrades, and patching.

Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery: Develop BCP strategies for core databases, ensuring continuous real-time replication to the DR site and rigorously testing business continuity plans.

Security & Compliance: Implement rigorous security measures including access controls, encryption, and PII controls; lead regular security audits; and maintain ISO 20000 & 27001 documentation alongside Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Performance Tuning & Maintenance: Monitor and optimize database performance via query tuning and indexing, perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting, and maintain vendor relationships and contract alignment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • Mandatory certification: Oracle Professional Certification (OCP).
  • Strongly recommended certifications: MS SQL, MySQL, Postgres, and MongoDB.
  • Added advantages: Oracle Cloud Technologies (OCI) certification/migrations, OS certification (Unix, Linux, AIX), and working knowledge of Commvault backup technology.
  • Advanced knowledge of Database Security and PII Controls Implementation.

Experience & Technical Competencies

At least 8 years of in-speed, in-depth experience managing Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, and open-source databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB) in a high-workload environment utilizing mixed operating systems (Windows, Linux, UNIX), microservices, and virtualization/VMware platforms.

Advanced Oracle DBA skills including High Availability setups (RAC, Data Guard), multitenant architecture administration, Exadata engineered systems, and RMAN backup/restore procedures.

Proven expertise in database performance tuning, cloud migrations, database monitoring (Enterprise Manager, Splunk ITSI), and project management for database upgrades and implementations.
