JOB DETAILS:
The role is responsible for the administration, performance tuning, capacity planning, security, management and support of the entire Liberty Kenya database and storage infrastructure. The database administrator should be an expert in operating databases in different platforms e.g. various core database platforms, operating systems, storage platforms, and cloud implementations.
The Database Administrator should be able to design databases for the required performance, capacity management considerations, and capable to align the performance database requirements with the costs in implementing and supporting these platforms. To help us advance this goal, we are seeking a talented, self-motivated, and skilled individual of high personal integrity to fill the position of Database Administrator.

Key Responsibilities
• Ensure database administration and maintenance tasks are performed regularly, effectively, and consistently.
• Continuously monitor capacity and performance of all databases and proactively conduct database tuning to ensure optimal efficiency.
• Manage availability of all databases and service recovery to ensure projects, incidents; problems are addressed according to defined set of policies, processes, procedures, and SLA’s.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and effectively resolve all database, storage, and backup issues in an accurate and timely manner.
• Maintain disaster recovery procedures to ensure continuous availability and speedy recovery for the entire database infrastructure.
• Lead the installation, migration and upgrade of all databases, storage, and backup solutions.
• Ensure continuous patching of all database infrastructure components to leverage on the latest fixes and capabilities.
• Design and implement organisational database systems to achieve optimal performance and availability targets.
• Manage service agreements and associated budgets for all databases, related storage, backup, and recovery solutions in use.
• Develop and implement capacity management procedures to keep databases within the expected capacity management thresholds.
• Create standard procedures to enhance scalability and performance of existing database and storage architecture through planning, designing, and implementing database projects in accordance with Liberty Kenya’s requirements.
• Managing licensing requirements and compliance on all databases within the Liberty Kenya’s infrastructure.
• Ensure effective security controls and standards are implemented on all databases that provide adequate protection against exposure to and impact of risks associated with data loss, corruption and/or unauthorized access.
• Ensure compliance to all policies that relate to the effective management of the database, storage, and backup infrastructure as well as those that relate to data privacy and protection.
• Conduct regular checks to ensure that all existing are effective and resolve any gaps noted through such process or through audit/risk reviews.
• Manage and review access controls to applications and databases.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
• ITIL, OCA, OCP, OCM, SQL Administration. Other relevant professional qualifications in IT field would be an added advantage.
• Agile certification and experience is preferred e.g., Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
• Project Management certification and experience is preferred e.g., PRINCE2, PMP.

Experience

• Minimum 3 years’ experience managing databases, storage, and backup solutions for medium to large-sized organizations.
• Working experience in a financial services organization would be added advantage.

Competencies

• Ability to effectively plan databases, server hardware, Linux and UNIX operating systems, and Windows operating systems support for optimal performance.
• Knowledge and experience in modern practices for databases, server hardware, Linux and UNIX operating systems, and Windows operating systems architecture and operations to provide guidance on quality improvements and strategic changes.
• Technical skills to effectively perform or guide performance of databases, server hardware, Linux and UNIX operating systems, and Windows operating systems design and operations activities/tasks in a manner that consistently produce high quality of service.
• Knowledge and effective application of all relevant policies, processes, procedures, and guidelines to consistently achieve required compliance standards or benchmarks.
• The ability to interact with other staff, build strong relationships at all levels and across all business units and organizations, and understand business imperatives.
• Exhibit excellent analytical skills, the ability to manage multiple projects under strict timelines, as well as the ability to work well in a demanding, dynamic environment and meet overall objectives.
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with the IT organization, project and application development teams, management, and business staff.
• Project management skills: financial/budget management, scheduling, and resource management.
