About the Role

As a Finance Officer for Venture Kenya, you’ll be the person who makes sure money in the venture moves the right way — in, out, and everywhere it needs to be tracked. You’ll review payment requests against approved budgets, oversee a small team handling receipts, disbursements, and record-keeping, and make sure every transaction has the paperwork to back it up. Day to day, that means checking that incoming funds were logged and protected the moment they arrived, approving payments once you’ve confirmed invoices are in order, chasing down any missing documentation before it becomes a bigger problem, and pulling together monthly financial reports for the Country Director and Holding Finance. You’ll be the person who can answer “where does that transaction stand?” at any moment, because the records are always current — not scrambled together before an audit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure all incoming funds are correctly recorded and protected on the day they’re received
  • Review and approve payment requests against approved budgets, ensuring invoices and supporting documentation are complete before processing
  • Oversee the Income & Receipts, Disbursements & Payments, and Records, Assests & Financial Reports functions to keep transactions accurate and traceable
  • Maintain complete, audit-ready financial records with zero missing invoices or unreconciled transactions
  • Compile and submit monthly financial reports to the Country Director and Holding Finance on time
  • Flag and resolve missing documentation or financial discrepancies before month-end close
  • Escalate any payment requests above approved thresholds, or any signs of financial irregularity, promptly and appropriately
  • Respond to financial queries from division heads, auditors, and Holding Finance as they arise

Requirements

We’re looking for someone precise, dependable, and comfortable owning financial accuracy from end to end — not just processing transactions, but genuinely understanding why every receipt and reconciliation matters to the bigger picture.

You bring:

  • A degree or professional qualification in Finance, Accounting, or a related field
  • Solid experience in financial management, budgeting, or accounting — ideally within an operational, field-based, or nonprofit/social-impact organization in Kenya or the wider East Africa region
  • A strong eye for detail and comfort working with budgets, reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • The judgment to know when to approve a payment, when to hold it, and when to escalate — and the confidence to do so
  • Clear communication skills, able to explain financial status and requirements to non-finance colleagues (division heads, field teams) as easily as to Holding Finance
  • Integrity and discretion, given the sensitivity of financial data and the audit trail required for carbon credit certification
  • Familiarity with Kenyan financial regulations, tax requirements, and banking practices
  • Comfort working within a structured reporting line, while still exercising sound independent judgment day to day
  • Bonus: experience with financial reporting requirements tied to certification, compliance, or audit processes (e.g., carbon credit programs, grant compliance, or similar)
  • Ensure all incoming funds are correctly recorded and protected on the day they’re received
  • Review and approve payment requests against approved budgets, ensuring invoices and supporting documentation are complete before processing
