JOB DETAILS:
General Surgeon

Job Purpose
The overall purpose of this job is to perform operations to treat or prevent diseases, repair damage caused by injuries, correct deformities, and improve the functions of the human body.

Key duties and responsibilities
• Provide clinical management of patients including emergency care and procedures, elective procedures, outpatient clinics, and inpatient management as per duty allocation;
• Provide professional guidance and training of doctors and health personnel to ensure maintenance of the highest standards of health care in the hospital;
• Ensure proper application of the principles and procedures of modern medicine in preventing, diagnosing, caring for, and treating illness, and injury using specialized testing, and diagnostic, medical, and psychological techniques;
• Perform surgical procedures to prevent or correct injury, disease, deformities, and patient function while adhering to regulatory and ethical protocols;
• Ensure proper handling of patients, proper record keeping and detailed examinations, and management of patients;
• Prescribe preoperative and postoperative treatment and procedures;
• Ensure sterility in the operating room, and all equipment and instruments;
• Coordinate follow-up meetings with patients and monitor health conditions after surgery or treatment;
• Conduct research to develop and test surgical techniques in order to improve procedures and surgery;
• Order and analyze diagnostic tests like X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs;
• Perform examinations to confirm that patients are strong enough to undergo surgery, explain the procedures, and discuss the risks involved;
• Determine the type of surgery that is needed, and the nurses, anaesthesiologists, specialists, and others who will be required;
• Schedule operations, coordinate the staff, plan the procedures, and order instruments and other supplies;
• Perform operations, in accordance with protocols;
• Consult with and assist other doctors and specialists;
• Refer patients to specialists and other professionals;
• Take part in research studies involving surgical techniques; and
• Any other responsibility assigned to the job holder by the supervisor from time to time;

Knowledge, experience, and qualifications required
• Master’s degree in General Surgery from a recognized institution.
• Specialization recognition by the KMPDB
• Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists’ Council
• Minimum 2 years Post Master’s degree

• Have a comprehensive understanding of the clinical and /or surgical procedures, patient care procedures, medical protocols, and testing procedures
• Have knowledge of the use of modern technology in the area of specialization
• Have analytical ability to evaluate and determine the health status of patients and implement the proper care plan
• Thorough knowledge of the health care industry/sector and knowledge of regulatory requirements affecting the sector.
• Have demonstrated administrative capabilities and an acceptable degree of professional competence
• Must possess excellent interpersonal, decision making and problem-solving skills
• Ability to handle stressful situations and work under pressure
• Be a team builder and a player
• Exhibit a high level of integrity, honesty, leadership transparency, and accountability in the performance of duties.
• Results-oriented with the ability to deliver the desired outcomes.

• Must be an honest person full of integrity in their personal conduct and handling of job responsibilities.
