Our client, Health Research Operations Kenya Limited (HROKL), the operating entity for the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme, a world class health research Programme based in Kenya, conducting multi-disciplinary research that spans infectious diseases, vaccines, maternal child and neonatal health, health systems, and emerging health threats. The Programme’s research leverages an integrated platform that includes bioscience laboratories, a clinical trials facility and clinical team, the clinical information network, the Kilifi demographic and health surveillance site, and robust community engagement, generating evidence that informs local and global health policy. HROKL is looking to recruit a detailed-oriented and organized Grants Officer who will manage the full grants lifecycle to ensure effective and accountable delivery of donor-funded projects.
Responsibilities or duties
This individual will be responsible for coordinating and managing the KWTRP grants lifecycle to ensure effective administration, compliance, and reporting of donor-funded projects. The role will support grant opportunity identification, proposal development, contract management, financial tracking, and post-award compliance to ensure that grants are properly managed in accordance with donor requirements and Programme policies.
KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead in the development and periodic review of grants management policies and strategies and maintain an up-to-date database of all grants and related contractual agreements.
- Support the identification of funding opportunities and coordinate the preparation and submission of grant proposals in collaboration with Project Managers and technical teams.
- Review project budgets, prepare grant agreements and related documentation, and follow up on fund disbursement processes to ensure compliance with donor requirements.
- Monitor grants accounting, reporting timelines, compliance requirements, and risk issues, working closely with Project Managers and Grants Accountants to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Receive, review, and provide feedback on periodic technical and financial reports for KWTRP projects before submission to donors.
- Handle grants management correspondence and related matters in consultation with Project Managers, Grants Accountants, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Provide technical guidance and support to staff on grants management processes and recommend improvements to existing policies and procedures where necessary.
- Supervise and support Assistant Grants Officers and contribute to capacity building in grants management through mentorship, on-the-job training, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND CAREER EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum Bachelor’s degree in commerce, finance, accounting, or any other relevant field from a recognized university. A master’s degree will be an added advantage.
Core Competencies:
- Demonstrated high levels of integrity and confidentiality.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with diverse teams and build strong relationships with donors.
- Ability to deliver quality outputs within strict timelines.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and supervisory skills.
Experience needed
- A minimum of 5 years of overall experience with 3 Years’ experience at Supervisory level at a reputable organization.
- Demonstrable experience grant management experiences in Health research, academic, NGO, or a development organization.
