Job Summary

The Heavy Construction Equipment Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, servicing, maintaining, and commissioning heavy construction machinery while ensuring maximum equipment reliability and customer satisfaction. The technician will also support machine inspections, warranty processes, technical reporting, and after-sales services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and electronic faults on heavy construction equipment.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance, scheduled servicing, and emergency repairs.
  • Repair and overhaul engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, axles, braking systems, and electrical components.
  • Conduct machine inspections before delivery and after repairs.
  • Install and commission new machines.
  • Perform machine troubleshooting both in the workshop and at customer sites.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, hydraulic diagrams, and electrical schematics.
  • Operate diagnostic software and electronic service tools.
  • Update machine service records and maintenance history.
  • Prepare accurate service reports and technical inspection reports.
  • Process warranty inspections and support warranty claims.
  • Perform machine testing after repairs.
  • Identify spare parts required for repairs and communicate requirements to the spare parts department.
  • Support machine assembly and commissioning.
  • Provide technical guidance and operator training to customers.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in the workshop and field operations.
  • Ensure compliance with manufacturer standards and company safety procedures.
  • Attend manufacturer technical training programs.
  • Assist with technical investigations and machine failure analysis.
  • Support the company’s GCSS or equipment management system by updating service information accurately.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Plant Engineering, Heavy Equipment Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Relevant technical certifications will be an added advantage.

Experience (AMUST)

  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience repairing and servicing heavy construction equipment.
  • Experience working with brands such as LiuGong, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, Hitachi, Hyundai, JCB, SANY, XCMG, CASE, SDLG, Doosan, or similar.
  • Experience in field service operations is highly desirable.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines.
  • Excellent understanding of hydraulic systems.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical and electronic control systems.
  • Ability to diagnose complex machine faults.
  • Good understanding of transmission systems.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs.
  • Computer literate and comfortable using diagnostic software, service management systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to prepare professional service reports.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • High level of integrity and professionalism.
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driving license will be an added advantage.
  • Willingness to travel extensively to customer sites across Kenya and neighboring countries.
