Background
Our client is hiring for a Human Resource Officer. The HR Officer will be responsible for building the HR department from the ground up, implementing HR systems, policies, and structures, and managing the full spectrum of HR functions. The ideal candidate must possess a strong personality, be independent, and capable of managing a diverse and predominantly male workforce with firmness, professionalism, and a positive attitude.
Key Responsibilities
- HR Department Setup and Policy Development: Establish and structure the HR department in line with company goals. Develop and implement HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook. Design and maintain employee records, HR database, and filing systems. Set up internal HR processes such as leave management, disciplinary procedures, and employee communication channels.
- Recruitment and Onboarding: Lead end-to-end recruitment: job descriptions, advertising, interviewing, selection, and onboarding. Coordinate staff orientation and induction programs. Maintain an updated manpower plan and ensure timely filling of staffing gaps.
- Employee Relations and Performance Management: Build strong relationships with staff across all departments to foster a positive work environment. Mediate conflict and handle disciplinary matters firmly and fairly. Implement and monitor a robust performance management system. Guide line managers on best practices in employee engagement and supervision.
- Training and Development: Identify training needs and coordinate internal and external capacity-building initiatives. Create an annual training calendar and track learning progress. Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
- Compliance and Reporting: Ensure HR practices comply with Kenyan labour laws and regulatory standards. Prepare monthly HR reports, including absenteeism, turnover, and performance metrics. Maintain accurate HR documentation to support audits, contracts, and legal obligations.
- Compensation and Benefits: Support payroll preparation and ensure timely submission of HR data. Manage employee benefits administration (e.g., leave, insurance, NHIF, NSSF, PAYE). Benchmark and propose competitive compensation strategies.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, or related field.
- 2–4 years of hands-on HR experience, preferably in a male-dominated industry.
- Member of IHRM with a valid practicing certificate is an added advantage.
- Strong knowledge of Kenyan employment laws and HR best practices.

- Strong attitude and emotional intelligence – able to stay calm, firm, and respectful in high-pressure environments.
- Able to work independently and drive initiatives with minimal supervision.
- High resilience and confidence – able to manage and influence a dynamic and predominantly male workforce.
