Purpose of the role

This role keeps the company’s technology running: the laptops, accounts, network and licences that every other department depends on to do their work.

It sits close to every function but reports centrally. It owns the systems that keep people equipped, connected and secure, and is accountable for how quickly problems get resolved and how well the company’s devices, licences, access and data are protected.

Key Responsibilities

The asset register. Maintain a live, accurate record of every device the company owns: who holds it, its condition, its repair history, and when it is due for replacement. This register is the basis for every hardware procurement and budget decision.

Software licensing. Track every licence and subscription the company holds – what it costs, when it renews, and who is actually using it. Flag unused licences before they renew, and flag any system running without a valid licence before it becomes a compliance problem.

The helpdesk. Own the support queue end to end: log every request, resolve it within agreed turnaround times, and escalate what you can’t fix yourself. Set up new joiners and retrieve equipment from leavers on the day it happens, not the day after.

Network and WiFi. Keep the office network and WiFi running reliably and securely. Segregate guest traffic from company traffic, and be the first call when connectivity drops, liaising with the ISP where the fault sits outside the office.

Accounts and access. Create, change and remove user access across every system the company uses, in step with who joins, changes role, or leaves. No one should hold access they no longer need, and every account should be traceable to a person.

Security. Run the baseline controls – endpoint protection, patching, backups, multi-factor authentication and be the person who notices and responds when something looks wrong. Keep company practice in line with the Data Protection Act, 2019.

How success is measured

Every measure is a before-and-after comparison, with the baseline recorded at the start of the work.

Helpdesk turnaround falls. Time from ticket raised to ticket resolved drops and stays down.

The asset register holds up. A spot audit of devices matches the register without exceptions.

Licence spend is clean. No licence renews unused, and no system runs without a valid licence.

Network uptime rises. WiFi and network outages fall in frequency and duration.

Access matches reality. An access review turns up no account that should already have been removed.

No repeat security finding. The same control gap does not show up in consecutive reviews.

Qualifications

Required

  • Three or more years in IT administration, systems administration, or a helpdesk role with hands-on ownership, not just ticket-passing.
  • Practical experience with Windows/macOS environments and Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace administration.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN) and hands-on experience configuring routers, switches and WiFi access points.
  • Understanding of security fundamentals: endpoint protection, firewalls, backups, access control.
  • Clear written English. Tickets, procedures and the asset register are the main record of this role’s work.
