JOB SUMMARY
The IT & Software Developer is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining software systems and IT infrastructure that support road construction and maintenance operations. The role focuses on automation of operational processes, fleet and asset management systems, project tracking tools, financial systems integration, cybersecurity, data management, and overall ICT support.
This position plays a strategic role in enhancing operational efficiency, minimizing downtime, improving reporting accuracy, securing company data, and supporting digital transformation across departments including Operations, Transport, Workshop, Finance, Procurement, Controls, and Administration.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Software Development & Systems Automation
- Design, develop, test, and deploy custom software solutions to support road construction operations.
- Develop internal systems for:
- Fleet and equipment tracking
- Preventive maintenance scheduling
- Fuel consumption monitoring
- Project progress tracking
- Inventory and spare parts management
- Procurement workflow automation
- HR and payroll support systems
- Document management and tender tracking
- Integrate software systems across departments to improve workflow efficiency and eliminate duplication.
- Develop dashboards and real-time reporting tools for management decision-making.
- Maintain and upgrade existing company systems to improve performance and security.
- Provide API integrations between accounting software, tracking systems, and operational platforms.
IT Infrastructure Management
- Maintain company servers, cloud systems, and databases.
- Ensure stable network connectivity across head office and project sites.
- Install, configure, and maintain computers, printers, biometric systems, CCTV systems, routers, and communication devices.
- Manage domain systems, email servers, and data backups.
- Monitor system performance and proactively prevent downtime.
- Implement disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
Cybersecurity & Data Protection
- Ensure compliance with the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019.
- Implement cybersecurity controls including firewalls, antivirus systems, endpoint protection, and access controls.
- Conduct regular system audits and vulnerability assessments.
- Manage user access rights and system privileges.
- Ensure secure storage and transmission of company and client data.
- Investigate and respond to IT security incidents or breaches.
Operational Systems Support
- Support GPS fleet tracking systems and telematics platforms.
- Ensure uptime of equipment monitoring systems.
- Support fuel monitoring systems and cost control technologies.
- Provide technical support for site-based digital reporting tools.
- Assist workshop teams with diagnostic software and equipment interface systems.
- Support finance systems including accounting software and digital payment platforms.
Data Management & Reporting
- Design and maintain centralized company databases.
- Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity across systems.
- Develop automated reporting tools for:
- Equipment uptime
- Project costs
- Fuel consumption
- Maintenance schedules
- Workforce productivity
- Financial performance
- Support management with analytical insights and performance dashboards.
User Support & Training
- Provide first-level and second-level IT support to staff.
- Troubleshoot hardware, software, and connectivity issues.
- Train employees on new systems and digital tools.
- Develop user manuals and system documentation.
- Promote responsible IT usage and digital best practices.
Innovation & Digital Strategy
- Identify opportunities for automation and digital optimization.
- Recommend new technologies suitable for road construction and fleet-intensive operations.
- Evaluate software vendors and external technology providers.
- Support digital transformation initiatives.
- Advise management on IT budgeting and technology investments.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with company IT policies and regulatory requirements.
- Support audits relating to system controls and data integrity.
- Maintain IT documentation, licensing records, and compliance reports.
- Implement internal control mechanisms within software systems.
General Duties
- Undertake any other duties as assigned by management in line with operational requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or related field.
- Professional certifications such as CCNA, CEH, Microsoft, AWS, or similar are an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in software development and IT systems management.
- Experience working in construction, logistics, fleet management, or engineering-based environments is highly preferred.
- Proven experience developing operational management systems.
- Experience in database design and system integration.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in programming languages such as:
- Python
