Intern - Respiratory Diseases

Position Summary
APHL seeks a highly motivated intern for work with the Infectious Disease program. The Intern within the Infectious Diseases (ID) Program will be responsible for providing administrative and coordination support to the Infectious Diseases team, as well as for working with an assigned staff mentor to pursue independent, short-term projects focused on Respiratory Diseases. The first project is a global health laboratory capacity building project and the second is focused on training new laboratory staff on quality practices for influenza and respiratory pathogen testing. The intern will handle multiple assignments, both in a support role as well as independently.

The Respiratory Diseases Intern must display excellent customer service skills and will have frequent communication with other programs at APHL, members, and partner organizations. This position reports to the Senior Specialist, Respiratory Diseases.

Duties & Responsibilities
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
1. Primary Projects
The Intern will be assigned two primary projects for the duration of their internship, focused on advancing and promoting the public health laboratory’s role in respiratory disease detection and prevention.

Project 1: Developing an International Laboratory Equipment Maintenance Training Program
Specific duties assigned to the intern in association with this project will be defined at the start of the internship based on the individual’s skills and abilities. The project may include:

• Assisting with the development and deployment of a needs assessment for international influenza testing laboratories in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean regions.
• Compiling and analyzing results and feedback from the needs assessment.
• Researching and compiling resources for curriculum development.
• Coordinating strategic planning calls.
• Coordinating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and other external partners to identify and develop a model for an international laboratory equipment maintenance training program.

Project 2: Supporting the Development of a Virology Quality Assurance Training
The second project will involve assisting with the development of a curriculum for quality management for influenza and respiratory pathogen testing for public health laboratory virology staff in coordination with the APHL Infectious Respiratory Pathogens subcommittee and APHL’s Quality Systems and Analytics Department. This project may include:

• Researching and collating existing training materials.
• Coordinating planning calls.
• Developing agendas.
• Creating promotional materials.
• Coordinating pilot webinars.

2. Administrative Support
The Intern also provides day-to-day administrative and organizational support for the Respiratory Diseases team. This includes:

• Scheduling and coordinating meetings, conference calls, online meetings and webinars, notifying the participants and sending out the agendas.
• Recording minutes and notes from meetings and calls and making them available to program staff and participants in a timely fashion.
• Posting, organizing, and maintaining electronic files.
• Preparing correspondence, reports, presentations, graphics, etc.
• Formatting or editing documents.
• Posting information to listservs and websites.
• Working with APHL staff on other duties as assigned, with the purpose of acclimating oneself with the coordination aspects of non-profit program management.

INTERNSHIP TERMS:
The internship opportunity ideally runs from January 2022 through September 2022, with flexibility depending on incumbent’s availability. This position is part time up to 20 hours per week.

Employment Standards- Education and Experience
• The successful internship candidate must have completed high school or equivalent level of education and have a minimum of two years of experience or undergraduate education. Student currently pursuing a master’s degree in public health or life science preferred.
• Strong desire to learn about respiratory diseases and the role of the public health system in detection and prevention of these diseases.

Knowledge
• Knowledge of microbiology and/or molecular laboratory science preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Skills
• Project and time management skills with ability to track and maintain progress toward project deadlines and objectives.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Well-organized and detail-oriented.
• Excellent customer relations skills.
• Proficient in typing and word processing, proofreading, and reading comprehension.
