Job Purpose
Lead in coordinating IMLU’s engagement with regional and international treaty bodies and national criminal justice reform, to deliver on the institutional goals and results in accordance with our strategic plan.

Main Responsibilities Of The Jobs
Managerial / Supervisory/ Operational Responsibilities or roles:

1. Coordination of all treaty body activities at the community, national, regional and international levels
 

2. Lead policy and research work for legislative, policy and institutional and implementation campaigns to advance criminal justice reforms
3. Identify, prioritise, and refine policy targets and language and work with the communications team for dissemination
4. Track legislation and policy and evolving political dynamics and identify the gaps and opportunities
5. Create and oversee strategic communications, research, and legislative products to support campaign the criminal justice reforms work
6. Work closely with other like-minded organizations (including PRWG-K) and government agencies to prioritize high-impact work
7. Identifying and leading public interest litigation that informs policy and jurisprudence;

Finance and Grants Manager job at Independent Medico Legal Unit

Job Purpose
Lead in grants management, financial management and in ensuring compliance to policies and procedures as well as team leadership.

Main Responsibilities Of The Jobs
Managerial / Supervisory/ Operational Responsibilities or roles:
1) Lead in the implementation of grants and financial policies and procedures in line with IMLU’s strategic goals and prescribed guidelines.
2) Consolidating and developing IMLU’s institutional and grants budget.
3) Monitor and ensure adherence to donor agreements including record maintenance and staff awareness on the same.
4) Timely and quality preparation and dissemination of the expenditure, donor and management reports for informed decision-making.
5) Coordinate the preparation of the annual institutional audits and grants audit.
6) Review internal financial controls and ensure compliance.
7) Maintain appropriate accounting records and ensure timely backup of digitalized accounting data.
8) Ensure prudent resource management by expenditure verification and ensure that budget and expenditure reports are timely disseminated to staff.
9) Prepare, maintain and update a fixed asset register including disposal of obsolete assets
10) Responsible for ensuring accurate donor coding and timely payment.
11) Ensure proper cash management and control.
12) Assist in departmental planning and execution.
13) Take lead in grants management including preparation of quality proposal budgets, donor compliance and reporting and grant close out procedures.
14) Support monthly and year-end finance procedures including staff orientation on staff matters.
15) Any other duty assigned from time to time.

Knowledge, Skills And Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or any other related field.

Minimum level of personal and professional experience required to perform effectively in the role:
Finance accounting, management and Grants Management. Team leadership/human resource management. Performance management experience.


Reparations Manager job at Independent Medico Legal Unit

Job Purpose
Overall in charge of the Reparations program: Leads in the formulation and implementation of strategies and interventions aimed at strengthening remedies and reparations for survivors of torture and other related violations in line with IMLU’s strategic plan.

Main Responsibilities Of The Jobs
Managerial / Supervisory/ Operational Responsibilities or roles:
Managerial Responsibilities
1) Lead in the formulation and implementation of strategies and interventions that result in strengthening remedies and reparations for survivors of torture and other related violations in Kenya.
2) Provide leadership and strategic direction in the implementation of the programme’s work plan in line with IMLU’s strategic plan.
 

3) Advice IMLU’s senior management staff on legal, policy and administration gaps/opportunities in relation to reparations.
4) Provide overall leadership of the reparations programme’s human and financial resources through developing budgets, subject to donor funds, undertaking effective monitoring and advising on financial management of the programme’s resources.
5) Manage the development and maintenance of strong stakeholder relationships through effective communication, negotiation and other related initiatives to deliver effective remedies and reparations for survivors of torture and other related violations.
6) Utilize litigation and advocacy strategies to develop and implement national legal frameworks that deliver reparations to both individuals and communities who have undergone torture and other related violations in Kenya.
7) Undertake quality control for all programme material and documents developed to ensure that they are in line with IMLU’s strategic plan.
8) Monitor the compliance of IMLU’s policies and procedures regarding the reparation programme’s work to ensure that the mandate of the organization is achieved.
9) Lead in implementing influential international standards on reparations such as the UN Basic Principles on the Right to Remedy and Reparation and others.
10) Ensure the reparation programme has the necessary monitoring and evaluation system and tools to to achieve the performance of the programming line with the set performance targets
11) Review and submit work plans, programme budgets and provide the progress of execution of compensations awarded by the courts and conclusive Rehabilitation provided to torture victims for complete healing and restoration to the Head of Programs,
12) Provide leadership to staff members in the reparations programme to ensure optimal performance of the department including performance management.
13) Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor from time to time

Knowledge, Skills And Experience
Minimum level of academic qualification, skills and knowledge required to perform effectively in the role:
1) Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences including Law (LLM), Psychology, Political Science or relevant disciplines from a recognized university.
2) Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills.
3) Ability to build and lead cohesive teams.
4) Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills
5) Knowledge of the project management cycle and public administration
6) Excellent IT skills, with working knowledge for the various packages.
7) Demonstrable experience and understanding of the roles of leading, managing, implementing and delivering envisaged change/results.
