A kitchen steward's responsibilities include maintaining kitchen cleanliness, sanitizing dishes and equipment, managing waste, and assisting with basic food prep and inventory.
Cleaning and sanitation: Wash and sanitize all dishes, utensils, cookware, and equipment. Clean and maintain kitchen floors, walls, and work surfaces. Waste management: Dispose of kitchen waste and recyclables properly and regularly empty and clean trash bins. Inventory and restocking: Monitor and restock cleaning supplies, food items, and other kitchen supplies. Keep track of dishware and utensil inventory. Equipment maintenance: Ensure all kitchen equipment is clean, polished, and in good working condition. Report any damaged or malfunctioning equipment. Support for culinary staff: Assist with basic food preparation tasks like washing and peeling vegetables, and help with plating and garnishing when needed. Storage: Organize and store cleaned equipment properly, and receive and store food deliveries.
Key skills are strong attention to detail, physical stamina, teamwork, and knowledge of sanitation and safety standards. Requirements often include physical fitness, the ability to work under pressure, and sometimes experience in food safety and hospitality
Physical fitness: Ability to lift heavy items, stand for long shifts, and perform strenuous tasks. Ability to work under pressure: Capable of working efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment. Knowledge of sanitation and safety: A fundamental understanding of health and safety regulations is essential. Basic food safety knowledge: Familiarity with safe food handling and storage practices is a plus. Hospitality experience: Previous experience in the service industry can be helpful but is not always mandatory.
