Position Summary

Reporting to the Medical Centre Manager, the Laboratory Technician will be responsible for specimen collection and processing, diagnostic testing, result validation, quality control, laboratory documentation, equipment maintenance, biosafety compliance, and timely reporting.

The role operates within a fast-paced, 24-hour multispecialty medical centre and requires strong technical competence, attention to detail, accuracy, confidentiality, and ability to work across flexible shifts.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing & Diagnostic Services

Collect, receive, identify, label, and process biological specimens in line with pre-analytical protocols and standard operating procedures.

Test Performance & Result Validation

Perform laboratory diagnostic tests including haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, and immunology. Verify, validate, document, and release accurate test results through the appropriate system.

Critical Results Communication

Identify and promptly communicate critical or panic laboratory findings to attending clinicians to support immediate medical intervention.

Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance

Participate in internal quality control, external quality assurance programs, proficiency testing, and maintain compliance with KMLTTB guidelines, Ministry of Health standards, safety codes, and accreditation readiness requirements such as ISO 15189.

Equipment & Inventory Management

Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot automated and semi-automated laboratory diagnostic equipment. Track reagent and consumable inventory levels to prevent stock-outs, downtime, or use of expired reagents.

Biosafety & Infection Prevention

Adhere to biosafety standards, chemical hygiene requirements, infection prevention and control protocols, medical waste segregation, decontamination, and safe disposal procedures.

Laboratory Records & Systems Management

Maintain accurate laboratory registers, patient data, test records, LIS/EMR entries, and confidential documentation.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

Support preparation of laboratory performance statistics, workload reports, incident documentation, clinical audits, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences from an institution recognized by the Government and KMLTTB.
  • Valid and current registration and practicing license with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.
  • Minimum 2–3 years’ progressive hands-on experience in a busy hospital, diagnostic centre, or multispecialty laboratory environment.
  • Practical experience using automated laboratory analyzers, Laboratory Information Systems, and Electronic Health Records.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical, technical, and diagnostic troubleshooting skills.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and precision in sample analysis and data entry.
  • Good organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure in a fast-paced emergency or high-patient-volume environment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • High integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and commitment to patient safety.
  • Willingness to work a flexible 24-hour shift roster, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Good customer service skills with a professional and empathetic approach during phlebotomy and specimen collection.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Swahili.
