A locum ICU nurse needs strong clinical skills, excellent critical thinking, and the ability to work under pressure.
Direct patient care: Providing bedside care, hygiene, and comfort to critically ill patients. Monitoring and assessment: Continuously monitoring patients' vital signs, neurological status, and fluid balance. Emergency response: Responding quickly to medical emergencies and participating in life-saving procedures. Treatment and medication administration: Administering prescribed medications and treatments, including setting up IVs. Collaboration: Working with physicians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement comprehensive care plans. Documentation: Maintaining detailed and accurate patient records. Patient and family support: Educating patients and their families about their condition and treatment, and providing emotional support.
Clinical and technical skills: Administering medications, operating life support equipment, performing diagnostic tests, setting up IVs, and taking vital signs. Critical thinking: Analyzing patient data, making sound decisions, and adapting care plans as a patient's condition changes. Communication: Collaborating with the healthcare team, explaining complex medical information to patients and families, and providing clear documentation. Organizational and time-management: Managing workload efficiently, maintaining accurate records, and handling multiple tasks simultaneously. Interpersonal and emotional intelligence: Working effectively in a high-stress environment, showing compassion, and providing emotional support to patients and families.
Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN). Licensure: Current and active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice. Experience: Minimum of two to five years of experience in an intensive care unit setting. Certifications: Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification is often mandatory, and a Certified Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) credential is highly desirable. Other: Ability to work long shifts and remain calm under pressure.
