Job Purpose

To safely and efficiently operate long modular trailers and heavy-haulage combinations for the transportation of heavy, oversized and specialized cargo between designated locations. The driver will be responsible for the safe operation and custody of the prime mover, modular trailer, cargo, and associated equipment, while ensuring compliance with company procedures, road traffic laws, axle-load requirements and all applicable transport and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate long modular trailers, prime movers and heavy-haulage combinations safely and efficiently.
  • Transport heavy, oversized and specialized cargo to designated destinations within agreed timelines.
  • Conduct pre-trip, during-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and trailer.
  • Check tyres, brakes, lights, steering, suspension, coupling, hydraulic and air systems.
  • Ensure cargo is properly positioned, distributed and securely fastened before departure.
  • Conduct regular checks on cargo restraints throughout the journey.
  • Follow approved routes, journey plans and abnormal-load movement requirements.
  • Safely manoeuvre long combinations in yards, ports, construction sites, narrow roads and congested areas.
  • Coordinate effectively with escort vehicles, banksmen, loading teams and site personnel.
  • Maintain accurate trip sheets, delivery notes, inspection records and proof of delivery.
  • Report accidents, breakdowns, cargo damage, mechanical defects and safety incidents immediately.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and carry out basic daily maintenance checks.
  • Comply with NTSA requirements, Traffic Laws, axle-load regulations and company HSE policies.
  • Observe prescribed driving hours, speed limits and vehicle-tracking requirements.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct when dealing with customers, colleagues and authorities.

Safety & Compliance

  • Comply with all applicable NTSA requirements, Traffic Act provisions, axle-load regulations and company transport policies.
  • Observe company speed limits, driving-hour requirements and vehicle-tracking procedures.
  • Maintain a zero-tolerance approach to reckless driving, overloading, unauthorised passengers and unsafe cargo practices.
  • Wear required PPE when operating at loading, unloading, construction or industrial sites.
  • Report accidents, near misses, breakdowns, cargo damage and other incidents immediately.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings and driver training programmes.

Qualifications And Experience

  • Minimum KCSE or equivalent.
  • Valid NTSA Class CE Driving License.
  • Valid Defensive Driving Certificate is an added advantage.
  • Minimum 5–7 years' proven commercial driving experience, with at least 3 years' experience operating articulated trucks/heavy-haulage combinations.
  • Proven experience operating long modular, low-loader, extendable or abnormal-load trailers.
  • Experience transporting heavy machinery, industrial equipment or project cargo is highly desirable.
  • Good knowledge of Kenyan roads and heavy-haulage routes.
  • Basic knowledge of heavy vehicle mechanics, load distribution and cargo securing
