About the role
The Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, servicing, maintaining, and repairing company vehicles and equipment to ensure maximum fleet availability, safety, reliability, and compliance. The role supports operational continuity by minimizing vehicle downtime through preventive maintenance and timely repairs.
Duties & Responsibilities
Vehicle Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on company vehicles, including servicing, lubrication, inspections, and component replacements.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic faults and carry out repairs.
- Repair and replace defective vehicle parts such as engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, steering systems, and electrical components.
- Conduct pre- and post-repair testing to ensure vehicles are safe and operational.
- Respond promptly to vehicle breakdowns and emergency repair requirements.
Fleet Reliability and Availability
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for all fleet vehicles.
- Monitor vehicle performance and identify recurring issues for root cause analysis and corrective action.
- Minimize fleet downtime through effective planning and timely execution of maintenance activities.
- Coordinate with drivers and operations teams to prioritize repairs based on operational needs.
Inspection and Compliance
- Conduct regular vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure all vehicles meet roadworthiness standards.
- Maintain records of inspections, repairs, maintenance activities, and vehicle service histories.
- Support audits and compliance checks related to fleet management.
Spare Parts and Inventory Management
- Monitor spare parts consumption and maintain appropriate stock levels of critical items.
- Raise requests for spare parts and repair materials as needed.
- Ensure proper storage and accountability of tools, equipment, and spare parts.
- Support cost control initiatives by identifying opportunities for repair versus replacement.
Safety and Housekeeping
- Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental policies.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
- Ensure proper use of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report safety hazards and incidents promptly.
Continuous Improvement
- Recommend improvements to vehicle maintenance practices and fleet reliability.
- Support initiatives aimed at reducing maintenance costs and improving vehicle utilization.
- Participate in problem-solving and root cause analysis activities.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Certificate in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair.
- Experience working with commercial vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, or utility vehicles.
- Valid driver’s license (preferred).
