Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the medical superintendent in charge, the specialist will: –
- Head the unit and discharge both clinical and administrative duties.
- Provide guidance in their departments as consultants in their respective areas
- Train students attached to the department
- Perform general surgical procedures as needed to preserve patient’s health safely
- Analyse records, reports, test results, or examination information to diagnose medical condition of patients
- Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients
- Monitor patient’s conditions and progress and re-evaluate treatments as necessary
- Refer patients to medical specialist or another practitioner when necessary
Requirements for Appointment
For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.Ch.B) degree from an institution recognized by Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board;
- Master’s degree in the relevant field;
- Certificate of Registration by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board;
- Have current annual retention certificate by the Kenya Medical practitioners and Dentists Board;
- Must have served in the grade of Senior Medical officer for at least three (3) years
- Certificate in Strategic Leadership Development Programme lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized institution.
