A night auditor is a hotel employee who works the overnight shift, performing both guest reception duties and critical accounting tasks, including running end-of-day reports, verifying financial transactions, and ensuring all charges are posted to the correct guest accounts. They are responsible for balancing the hotel's accounts, reconciling cash and credit card activity, and preparing the hotel for the morning shift by ensuring financial data is accurate and complete.  

Front Desk Duties: Checking guests in and out, and providing customer service during the night. Financial Reconciliation: Posting room charges and taxes to guest accounts, and verifying all guest and departmental transactions are accounted for. End-of-Day Processing: Running the nightly reports, changing the date in the hotel's system, and ensuring all financial data balances correctly. Discrepancy Resolution: Reviewing reports for any errors or missed transactions, such as unposted charges or outstanding payments, and addressing them to ensure accuracy. Report Generation: Preparing various reports summarizing the hotel's financial performance for the day.
Ensures Accurate Revenue: The night auditor's work is vital for ensuring the hotel correctly receives payment for all services rendered. Maintains Financial Order: They balance the books, verifying that daily cash, credit card, and other financial activities are accurately recorded. Supports Morning Shift: By completing the financial closing process and setting up systems, they ensure the morning shift can operate smoothly. Acts as a Sole Authority: Often, the night auditor is the only staff member on duty, serving as the primary point of contact and authority for the hotel.
