Background

The role oversees nursing workforce planning, professional development, patient care standards, and nursing quality improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise nursing staff across departments.
  • Ensure compliance with nursing practice standards and patient care protocols.
  • Maintain optimal nurse-to-patient ratios across shifts.
  • Manage nursing workforce scheduling and staffing efficiency.
  • Implement infection prevention and patient safety programmes.
  • Promote continuous professional development for nursing staff.
  • Monitor nursing quality indicators and patient satisfaction levels.
  • Foster a supportive and high-performance nursing culture.

Key Success Factors

  • Deliver high standards of quality and safe nursing care across all hospital units.
  • Maintain approved nurse-to-patient staffing ratios across all shifts while minimizing excessive overtime and reliance on agency staff.
  • Ensure infection prevention compliance, including maintaining hand hygiene adherence of at least 95% and keeping hospital infection rates within national healthcare benchmarks.
  • Achieve patient satisfaction scores of at least 85% in relation to nursing care and services.
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient documentation, with at least 98% documentation compliance.
  • Ensure medication administration accuracy of at least 99% in line with patient safety standards.
  • Promote workforce stability by maintaining annual nursing staff turnover at or below 18%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
  • Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Master’s degree in Nursing Administration or Healthcare Management preferred
  • Minimum 8 years of nursing experience with 3–5 years in leadership roles
  • Lead and supervise nursing staff across departments.
  • Ensure compliance with nursing practice standards and patient care protocols.
  • Maintain optimal nurse-to-patient ratios across shifts.
