Responsibilities or duties

  • Respond to and resolve mechanical emergencies through effective diagnostics and repair.
  • Conduct major repairs and rebuilds of diesel engines, transmissions, and hydraulic pumps for heavy equipment such as backhoes and wheel loaders.
  • Plan and execute comprehensive maintenance schedules, including routine servicing, lubrication, and safety inspections to prevent breakdowns.
  • Minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency
  • Supervise workshop operations, assign tasks and provide technical training to junior mechanics
  • Service specialized equipment such as diesel generators (CAT, PERKINS, Kohler, and BH models), water pumps, outboard engines, cranes, and construction machinery.
  • Cleaning, lubricating, and conducting routine services on heavy-duty vehicles and machine attachments such as hydraulic horse pipes, blades, and side booms.
  • Monitoring equipment performance and troubleshooting issues.
  • Collaborating with team members to optimize plant efficiency
  • Advise on safe work methods(safety protocols) /conditions appropriate for safe use of the equipment; personal protective equipment
  • Adhere to operator code of practice and present yourself in neat and professional appearance;
  • Adhere to all Environmental Health & Safety procedures, policies and instructions;
  • Keep accurate maintenance records
  • Any other work related duty as assigned from time to time.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field from a recognized institution. Government Trade Test (GTT) certification is a strong advantage.
  • Certification as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic or Diesel Mechanic from a recognized technical institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair complex mechanical and hydraulic systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of diesel engines and heavy construction machinery, including dozers, backhoes, concrete mixers, generators, vibrators, and rammers.
  • Familiarity with modern diagnostic and testing technologies and tools
  • Ability to safely lift, move, and operate heavy machinery and perform physically demanding tasks in outdoor and workshop environments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to document work, report issues clearly, and collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors.
  • Mechanical aptitude, problem solving, manual dexterity and knowledge of electrical systems, hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • Able to conduct pre-operational checks on equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work under extreme weather conditions and harsh environment.
  • Must have good hearing and vision and is physically fit.
  • Takes initiative, works with collegiality, is resourceful, professional, must be hardworking, have a strong sense of work ethics, honest and loyal.

Experience needed

Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience working as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic
