Africa Programme
Africa’s wilderness and wildlife are recognised behemoths of the natural world and successful conservation here is critical to FFI’s aim to protect and restore nature, and to ensure climate stability alongside human health and well-being. From the well-known plight of forest elephants and eastern gorillas to the less well-known but also critically threatened pygmy hippos, pangolin, okapi, lion and wild dog, from corals and seagrass beds to grasslands and forests; FFI’s Africa Programme enables the conservation action that ensures species and ecosystems can thrive and sustain life for future generations in 13 countries throughout West, Central, East and Southern Africa. In all of our operations we work with and alongside local partners, empowering locally led solutions and focusing on the sustainable use, and the fair and equitable governance and management of natural resources as a means to effective conservation in the long-term.

Kenya Team
FFI has supported wildlife conservation and management in Kenya in some shape or form since our foundation in 1903, but opened an office there exactly a century later, when it supported a community-led initiative in Northern Kenya working to develop capacity and self-sufficiency of community conservancies and natural management covering >44,000km2. At the same time and in a similar manner, we supported Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Alongside continuing support of the Northern Rangelands Trust and Ol Pejeta Conservancy today, FFI’s portfolio within Kenya includes both marine and terrestrial work, focusing on flagship species such as black rhinos, for example, but also natural resources management and social assessments across many sites.

The Opportunity
This is a truly exciting time to be joining FFI’s Kenya Programme as it grows its terrestrial species work with a newly funded project. You will be an experienced Project Officer, with experience of working for a conservation organisation, knowledge of the development of national action plans within Africa and a clear understanding of a project life-cycle. Ideally, you will have experience in providing support for the design, implementation, reporting, and monitoring and evaluation of a project and will understand the importance of meeting donor and legal compliance requirements.
You will be able to provide efficient support to the team, both technically and administratively. You will have demonstrable experience of conducting research and report writing, with the experience of consolidating information succinctly and able to present it in a variety of formats from donors’ reports, power point presentations and internal updates and communications. With strong organisational skills, a structured and methodical approach to your work and a clear focus on results and impacts, you will be able to provide effective operational, administrative, financial and grant management project support.

Terms and Conditions

Duration of Contract: Until 31 July 2023
Probation Period: 6 months
Salary: $17,000 Gross per year
Location: Nairobi, Kenya. With travel to domestic project sites as required.
Benefits: 25 working days’ annual leave entitlement plus national public holidays observed in Kenya

Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position, working Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 5.00pm with a one-hour lunch break. These hours may vary depending on the requirements of the job in the field.

Job Title: Project Officer - Terrestrial, Kenya
Reporting to: Technical Specialist, Conservation Policy, Kenya
Line Manager of: Currently no direct line management

Kenya Programme Staff, Senior Programme Manager, Eastern Africa, Technical Specialist, Biomonitoring, Africa, Africa Programme Staff, Wildlife Trade Team Staff

Purpose:
The Project Officer will provide efficient project level support, both technically and administratively helping to ensure the successful design, implementation, reporting, monitoring and evaluation of a specific FFI Kenya species conservation project and related funds.

Specific Duties:
Technical Support
• Undertake desktop research to support the development of this project, funds and initiatives related to terrestrial species work, including species action planning processes.
• Provide technical input on the project design, and implementation using a clear project management approach.
• Provide technical support and input on conservation issues and priorities related to the project
• Support project monitoring and evaluation ensuring logical framework milestones and indicators are attained within set timeframes and budgets.
• Contribute to the development of project specific reports (including donor, internal and technical), ensuring timely and high-quality products.
• Under the guidance of relevant specialists, provide support for setting up and implementing surveys on terrestrial species conservation research.
• Provide project specific knowledge and information for fundraising activities.
• Track and follow up project deliverables assigned to partners and consultants ensuring timely submission of high-quality outputs.
• Align project related work to FFI policies and procedures while also ensuring donor and legal compliance requirements are met.
• Support relevant staff in the gathering, consolidating and sharing of lessons learnt.

Project Support
• Provide an efficient administrative and operational function to the project.
• Provide logistical support for meetings and workshops, including the putting together and dissemination of information packs that include external audiences.
• Attend meetings and take notes/minutes, ensuring appropriate dissemination and follow up on agreed actions.
• Provide in-country logistical support to people travelling to and within Kenya to attend FFI meetings and functions including airport transfers, accommodation, etc.
• As required, provide logistical support to field activities, including the handling of cash payments and other funds disbursements, in line with FFI protocols, policies and procedures.
• Implement data management in line with FFI protocols, policies and procedures, helping to ensure that all relevant documentation is on FFI’s data management systems.

Partnerships
• At project level, map out who the stakeholders are in the context of this projects.
• Maintaining regular and appropriate contact with key stakeholders/partners.
• Where required, gather and avail information to support managers to respond to partners.

Communications and Representation
• Support development of project specific internal and external communication materials.
• As requested, attend external meetings to represent and actively promote FFI and project specific activities.
• Respond, as appropriate, to external enquiries relating to project queries.
• With guidance of prepare and keep an updated a contact database to help convening meetings, dissemination of publications and communications etc.
• Prepare high quality power point presentations and communications based on literature reviews and other project activities.

Other
• Undertake other activities that fall within FFI’s strategy and plans as requested by your Line Manager, commensurate with your skills, experience and role.
• Work as an active member of the FFI Africa and FFI Kenya team and attend FFI Kenya team meetings.
• Duties may be altered, reasonably added or delegated from time to time to reflect changes within the organization’s activities and structure

Person Specification
Qualification and Language
Essential:
• Bachelor’s degree in a natural resource management field
• Fluency in English, both spoken and written

Skills, Knowledge and experience
Essential:
• Minimum of three years of experience in conservation project support at Officer/Coordinator level
• Demonstrable experience of project management and providing logistical support to projects
• Meticulous at conducting desktop research and analysis of information.
• Proven experience in coordinating and implementing species surveys
• Builds positive internal and external relationships
• Excellent IT literacy, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
• Excellent minute taking and report writing skills
• Demonstrable skills in providing technical information for reports
• Experience in project monitoring and evaluation
• Proven experience of using the logical framework as a monitoring tool

Desirable:
Five years of experience in conservation project support at Officer/Coordinator level
