Key Responsibilities of a Radiographer
Prepare Patients for Imaging Procedures
- Verify patient identity and confirm examination request.
- Explain the procedure clearly to reduce anxiety.
- Obtain informed consent where required.
- Position the patient correctly to obtain accurate images.
- Remove metallic objects that may interfere with imaging.
- Assess pregnancy status where applicable (for radiation safety)
Operate Radiographic Equipment (X-ray, CT, MRI, Fluoroscopy)
- Select correct imaging parameters based on examination type.
- Adjust exposure settings to ensure image clarity while minimizing radiation dose.
- Operate digital imaging systems and PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System).
- Monitor the patient during scanning procedures.
- Ensure proper calibration of machines before use.
Ensure Radiation Safety and Protection
- Apply ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
- Use protective gear (lead aprons, thyroid shields, gonadal shields).
- Monitor personal radiation exposure using dosimeters.
- Protect patients, colleagues, and self from unnecessary radiation.
Image Evaluation and Quality Assurance
- Review images immediately after exposure to confirm clarity and diagnostic quality.
- Check for correct patient positioning and proper anatomical coverage.
- Ensure there are no artifacts (e.g., movement blur, foreign objects).
- Repeat imaging only when absolutely necessary to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure.
- Maintain high-quality imaging standards to support accurate medical diagnosis.
Equipment Maintenance and Reporting Faults
- Perform routine daily equipment checks before use.
- Clean and disinfect imaging equipment according to infection control protocols.
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions promptly to biomedical engineers.
- Maintain service logs and maintenance records.
- Ensure machines are safe and compliant with radiation safety standards.
Qualification
Qualifications:
- Diploma or Degree in Radiography from a recognized institution.
- Registration with the Kenya Radiation Protection Board (or relevant regulatory body).
- Valid practicing license.
- Experience in a hospital or diagnostic center is an added advantage.
