About us

At Tana, we believe that your skills and your character define you, not where in the world you were born. We empower brilliant young people in Africa to start meaningful careers by training them for tech and data roles, and embedding them into full-time, remote positions with companies across North America and Europe. We're a rapidly growing start-up headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with a vision to change the world of work.

Position Overview

We are hiring a Senior Backend .NET Developer to own the backend of a commercial real estate software platform. The platform helps companies manage property leases, documents, key dates, tasks and lease accounting compliance.

You will be the senior .NET expert on the team. This role requires someone who can work independently, make sound technical decisions and take accountability for what ships. Your focus will be backend development, with occasional frontend React/TypeScript tasks to support feature delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain backend services in C#/.NET and ASP.NET Core.
  • Build and maintain the GraphQL API layer consumed by the frontend.
  • Design database schemas and data access for SQL and NoSQL databases, including Azure SQL and Cosmos DB.
  • Integrate with Azure services for storage, identity/authentication, functions and search.
  • Implement authentication, authorisation and security best practices across the API, including OAuth2, JWT and role-based access control.
  • Own features end to end, from scoping with the architect through implementation, unit testing, code review and deployment via Azure DevOps CI/CD.
  • Keep the codebase clean and well-structured, following the team's architecture patterns, including Clean Architecture, DDD and CQRS.
  • Add logging and monitoring to help diagnose production issues.
  • Support feature delivery by working on React/TypeScript frontend tasks

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on backend development experience in C#/.NET and ASP.NET Core.
  • Hands-on experience building GraphQL APIs. The platform uses Hot Chocolate, but experience with any GraphQL framework is acceptable.
  • Strong SQL and NoSQL database skills, including schema design and querying. Relevant examples include SQL Server/Azure SQL and Cosmos DB or MongoDB.
  • Experience using an ORM or data access framework to connect .NET services to databases, such as Entity Framework Core.
  • Working knowledge of Azure services used by .NET applications, such as App Service/Container Apps, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Blob Storage, Key Vault and Entra ID.
  • Understanding of CI/CD and experience deploying through a pipeline. Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions or similar experience is acceptable.
  • Experience with secure API design, including authentication and authorisation using OAuth2/OIDC, JWT and role-based access control.
  • Unit testing as a normal part of development, using tools such as NUnit or xUnit.
  • Familiarity with common .NET architecture patterns, including Clean Architecture, DDD, CQRS and MediatR. You do not need experience with every pattern, but should understand them and be able to work within a codebase built on them.
  • Independence: comfortable being the senior go-to .NET expert and accountable for what ships.
  • A proactive approach to raising problems and suggesting improvements.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar tools, services and parts of the stack, including frontend development.

Nice to have

  • Foundational frontend experience in React and TypeScript.
  • Experience with supporting .NET libraries such as FluentValidation, AutoMapper and NLog.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Application Insights and OpenTelemetry.
