Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibility at this level will entails;
- Preparation of court pleadings in the relevant court/ tribunals
- Collecting research and collating data on legal issues;
- Preparation of legal opinion;
- Represent clients in Magistrate Courts, Senior Resident Magistrate Courts and Kadhis Courts and other legal forum;
- Provide legal advice and referrals to clients;
- Preparing and filing precise and timely court pleadings in arbitration proceedings;
- Providing legal services in relation to litigation and alternative dispute resolution;
- Attending court for prosecution/defending cases involving NLAS;
- Providing legal advice to the NLAS staff for informed decisions;
- Vetting and verifying external lawyers’ bills submitted for payment;
- Verifying payment or bills submitted by lawyers and process servers; and
- Preparing contracts for both external and internal use.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Qualifications:
For appointments to this grade, a candidate must have;
- Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law;
- Admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate or a clearance from the Law Society of Kenya; and
- Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results;
Experience needed
Experience:
- At least six (6) years cumulative work experience, three (3) of which should have been at the grade of Legal Aid Officer 1 or comparable position in the public service or private sector;
Any other provided details (e.g., benefits, work environment, team info, or additional notes)
Remuneration will be in accordance with NLAS Salary Scale;
NOTE: NLAS Grades 1, 2 & 3 are on a three-years contract basis, renewable once while the rest are on permanent and pensionable terms
Successful candidates MUST satisfy the requirements of Leadership and Integrity as set out in Chapter six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya and shall be required to present the following documents before being issued with an offer letter;
- Clearance from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission;
- Tax Compliance Certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority;
- Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations;
- Certificate of Clearance from Credit Reference Bureau; and
- Clearance Certificate from Higher Education Loans Board or proof of ongoing repayments.
