Purpose of the Role
The Senior Mechanic – Automotive is responsible for leading the workshop team in maintaining, repairing, and ensuring the functionality and reliability of company trucks, plant equipment, and mechanical systems. The role ensures high equipment uptime, adherence to maintenance standards, and efficient workshop operations.
Key Responsibilities.
- Lead and supervise the workshop team to ensure high-quality maintenance and repairs for all company trucks and plant equipment.
- Ensure strong equipment performance, targeting 85%+ daily uptime and maintaining long-term reliability at 95%+.
- Conduct diagnostics, troubleshoot faults, and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance schedules.
- Coordinate procurement and availability of spare parts and consumables with the procurement and stores teams.
- Ensure proper workshop housekeeping, safety practices, and adherence to company procedures.
- Provide preventive maintenance guidance to drivers and the logistics team to improve uptime and reduce costs.
- Lead the acquisition process for new automotive machinery and support the Logistics Manager when required.
- Monitor team performance and support continuous improvement and skills development.
- Prepare and support in workshop budget needs while ensuring cost-effective maintenance operations.
Education
Degree, Diploma, or Vocational Training in Automotive Engineering.
Relevant Previous Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a workshop supervisor or Senior Mechanic.
- Strong knowledge of truck systems, heavy machinery, hydraulics, and auto-electrical systems.
- Valid driving license, including capability to operate up to 10-wheeler trucks.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, work orders, and SOPs.
- Strong adherence to health and safety guidelines.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong leadership and team coordination skills.
- Hands-on technical competence with proven diagnostic ability.
- Good project management and data analysis skills.
- Ability to make data-driven decisions and apply root cause analysis.
- Open, proactive communication style.
- High integrity, reliability, and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to stand/walk for long hours and work under pressure.
- Ability to make swift, informed decisions to reduce MTTR.
