The Position
The Aga Khan University’s Institute for Educational Development, East Africa (IED) seeks to recruit a Senior Programme Officer, Climate Change Adaptation. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and managing climate change adaptation programmes, ensuring their effective implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. This role involves working with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, community groups, and academic institutions, to develop and implement innovative adaptation strategies.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and implementation of climate change adaptation programmes and projects.
- Manage programme budgets, ensuring efficient resource allocation and financial accountability.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government ministries, local authorities, community leaders, and partner organizations.
- Oversee the monitoring and evaluation of programme activities, ensuring that objectives are met and lessons learned are documented.
- Contribute to research and knowledge generation on climate change adaptation, and disseminate findings through publications and presentations.
- Provide technical guidance and capacity building to programme staff and partners on climate change adaptation strategies.
- Represent the University in relevant forums, workshops, and conferences related to climate change adaptation.
- Ensure compliance with AKU policies and procedures, as well as donor requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Geography, or a related field. A PhD is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in managing climate change adaptation programmes, preferably in the East African context.
- Proven experience in project management, including budget management, M&E, and reporting.
- Strong understanding of climate change science, adaptation strategies, and policy frameworks.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a multicultural environment.
- Proficiency in relevant software, including MS Office Suite and project management tools.
- Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Swahili or other local languages is an asset.
