Shift Technician at Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL)

Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL) is the leading manufacturer and distributor of wines and spirits in Kenya , Eastern and Central Africa region.

Job Purpose

This position is responsible for ensuring the continuous and efficient operation of production machinery and equipment during assigned shifts. This role involves performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to minimise downtime and maintain optimal production levels.

Main Responsibilities

Equipment maintenance and repair

  • Conduct regular inspections of all production machinery and equipment to identify any signs of wear, damage, or malfunction.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, including lubrication, cleaning, and part replacements, to prevent equipment failures.
  • Follow maintenance schedules and checklists to ensure all tasks are completed on time.
  • Ensure all machines and tools are properly calibrated to maintain precision and accuracy in production processes.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues promptly to minimise downtime

Production support

  • Continuously monitor production machinery and processes to ensure they are running smoothly and efficiently.
  • Identify and address any deviations from standard operating procedures promptly.
  • Provide technical support to production staff during shifts, assisting with machine setup, operation, and troubleshooting.
  • Respond quickly to any production-related issues to minimise downtime.
  • Collaborate closely with production supervisors and operators to ensure seamless workflow and communication

TPM and Continuous Improvement

  • Support the TPM way of working.
  • Support the implementation of the improvement activities.

Safety compliance

  • Conduct safety checks on all equipment to ensure they are operating safely and in compliance with safety standards
  • Participate in safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Implement recommendations from safety audits to improve workplace safety.
  • Adhere to all workplace safety regulations and standards set by regulatory bodies and the company.
  • Consistently use appropriate PPE, such as safety glasses, gloves, and ear protection, while performing tasks

Minimum Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Academic Qualifications

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Production Option)

Experience 

  • At least 3 years experience in a similar role
  • Work experience within an FMCG environment will be advantageous

  • Ability to operate and maintain various machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments.
  • Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical manuals to understand specifications and tolerances.
  • Skill in selecting, setting up, and maintaining cutting tools and equipment for optimal performance.
  • Competence in using measuring instruments (micrometres, callipers, gauges) to ensure parts meet specified tolerances and quality standards.
  • Experience with computer numerical control (CNC) programming and operation for automated machining tasks.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Capability to service and repair machine parts and equipment to ensure continuous operation.

Behavioural Competencies

  • Flexible in adjusting to new methods, tools, and technologies in the machining field.
  • Proactively identifies issues and implements effective solutions to overcome challenges.
