The Steward will support the kitchen team by ensuring cleanliness of kitchenware, utensils, work surfaces, and the overall kitchen environment. The role also involves assisting in food service and waste management.
Key Responsibilities
- Clean and sanitize all kitchen utensils, dishes, cookware, and surfaces.
- Maintain cleanliness of food preparation and storage areas.
- Properly dispose of kitchen waste and manage garbage separation.
- Replenish kitchen supplies and assist in basic food preparation tasks when needed.
- Support meal service delivery and dining area cleanliness.
- Ensure compliance with hospital hygiene and food safety standards.
- Report any maintenance or safety issues in the kitchen environment.
- Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist in receiving and storing food deliveries.
- Follow strict infection control protocols for mental health facility requirements.
- Support dietary staff in meal planning for patients with special nutritional needs.
- Participate in regular kitchen equipment maintenance checks.
- Adhere to hospital policies on patient confidentiality and safety.
Requirements
- KCSE Certificate or equivalent; formal training in hospitality or food service is an added advantage.
- At least 1 year of experience in a hospital, hotel, or institutional kitchen setting.
- Knowledge of basic food hygiene and safety practices.
- Physically fit, well-organized, and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Team player with good communication and time management skills.
- Preferred Attributes:
- Experience in healthcare or mental health facility kitchens.
- Certification in food handling (e.g., KNEC/County Government).
- Ability to follow detailed instructions for therapeutic meal plans.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends/holidays.
