Position Summary

Reporting to the Project Manager/Director of Planning and Alumni Affairs, the Clerk of Works shall safeguard the University’s interests by ensuring that all construction works are executed in accordance with the approved drawings, specifications, Bills of Quantities, contractual requirements, applicable building codes, and quality standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily construction activities on site to ensure compliance with approved architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical drawings.
  • Monitor workmanship and ensure all construction activities meet the required quality standards and specifications.
  • Inspect and approve materials delivered to site before incorporation into the works.
  • Verify that construction methods conform to engineering and architectural requirements.
  • Ensure strict adherence to approved construction schedules and advise on delays or potential risks.
  • Maintain detailed daily site diaries, inspection records, material registers, photographic records, and progress reports.
  • Witness material sampling, laboratory testing, concrete works, reinforcement fixing, waterproofing, finishing works, and commissioning activities.
  • Identify defective workmanship and non-conforming works and recommend immediate corrective measures.
  • Participate in site meetings and prepare technical inspection reports.
  • Verify completed works for interim payment certificates and project progress valuations.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations and environmental requirements.
  • Coordinate inspections with consultants, contractors, subcontractors, and relevant government agencies.
  • Ensure all statutory approvals and inspections are undertaken before critical stages of construction.
  • Monitor project costs by reporting wastage, variations, and unauthorized works.
  • Assist in project commissioning, snagging, practical completion, and final handover.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Project Manager or the University.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Diploma or Higher Diploma in Building Technology, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related construction discipline from a recognized institution. A bachelor’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • Registration with the National Construction Authority (NCA) and/or the relevant professional body.
  • A valid Practicing License where applicable.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in supervision of medium to large-scale building construction projects.
  • Proven experience supervising institutional, hospital, university, commercial, or multi-storey reinforced concrete buildings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of finishing works, mechanical installations, electrical installations, plumbing, and external infrastructure works.
  • Working knowledge of standard forms of building contracts (e.g., JBC, FIDIC, or equivalent) and the ability to monitor compliance with contract specifications, quality standards, and construction procedures.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary consulting teams.

Competencies and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of construction quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC).
  • Sound understanding of Kenyan Building Code, Occupational Safety and Health requirements, and National Construction Authority regulations.
  • Excellent interpretation of architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, report-writing, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict project deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and construction reporting software. Knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Project, or Primavera P6 will be an added advantage.
