THE ROLE PURPOSE (LINK To overall business objectives, eg. arrp)
The Developer – Recon & Settlements is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust, scalable, and automated reconciliation and settlement systems for Equity Group Holdings. This role supports the Group’s Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan (ARRP) by ensuring operational accuracy, financial integrity, and compliance across multi-country operations. The Senior Developer will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver modern, API-driven, and analytics-enabled reconciliation platforms.
the KEY responsibilities (DUTIES)
Develop and maintain automated reconciliation and settlement systems for banking and financial operations.
Build and support microservices and APIs for real-time transaction matching and exception handling.
Provide technical expertise in Java and full stack development for reconciliation platforms.
Implement and integrate global reconciliation tools (e.g., SmartStream TLM, FIS IntelliMatch, ReconArt, or equivalent).
Drive continuous improvement through automation, exception reduction, and straight-through processing (STP).
Participate in Agile delivery practices, code reviews, and documentation.
Work closely with Finance, Treasury, Operations, and IT to align systems with business needs.
CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND DELIVERABLES
Financial: Ensure accurate and timely reconciliation of high-volume financial transactions; reduce financial exposure due to unmatched items.
Processes: Deliver automated, rules-based reconciliation workflows with minimal manual intervention.
Systems: Integrate reconciliation platforms with core banking, payment gateways, and ERP systems.
Customers/Clients: Ensure internal stakeholders (Finance, Treasury, Risk) have access to real-time reconciliation dashboards and reports.
Qualifications
KEY TECHNICAL AND LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS IN THE ROLE
Technical Competencies:
Proficiency in Java and full stack development (React/Angular, Node.js, Spring Boot, etc.)
Full stack development skills (front-end frameworks such as React/Angular, back-end with Node.js, RESTful APIs)
Data integration: SQL, ETL tools, APIs, Kafka, RESTful services
Cloud-native development: Azure, AWS, or GCP
Financial messaging standards: SWIFT, ISO 20022, NACHA, SEPA
Understanding of RPA technologies like Power Platform, Ui Path.
Integration with enterprise systems (ERP, payment gateways) using Java
Leadership Competencies:
Agile delivery and DevOps practices
Stakeholder engagement and communication
Risk and compliance awareness
Experience requirements
4+ years in financial systems development, with 2+ years in reconciliations and settlements engineering
Experience in banking, fintech, or financial services environments
Proven track record of delivering reconciliation automation projects
Experience working in Agile teams and cross-functional environments

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, or related field
Nice to Have:
Professional Java certification (e.g., Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE, Oracle Certified Expert: Java EE)
Certification in reconciliation platforms (e.g., SmartStream, FIS)
Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate or equivalent
Agile/Scrum certification
