Position Overview

Tatu City is looking to hire a Forestry Officer – Reforestation, Tree Harvesting Management and Translocation to safely and professionally carry out tree harvesting, relocation, and translocation activities in compliance with environmental approvals, ensuring tree survival (for transplanted and translocated trees), and alignment with conservation and development requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify trees approved for harvesting or translocation based on permits and site plans
  • Carry out tree felling, pruning, and general management using approved methods and safe operational practices
  • Plan, operate, and maintain tools and equipment used in harvesting, pruning, and translocation, ensuring efficiency and safety.
  • Execute tree translocation and replanting in designated areas, ensuring proper spacing, orientation, soil preparation, and use of approved techniques to maximise survival.
  • Apply post-translocation care including staking, watering, mulching, and monitoring survival rates
  • Identify, monitor, and control tree pests and diseases using approved forestry and environmental management practices
  • Apply appropriate stump treatment methods after harvesting to prevent regrowth, pest infestation, and disease spread
  • Support the utilisation and management of materials originating from tree harvesting activities, including sorting and coordination with relevant stakeholders in line with regulatory requirements
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permits, safety standards, and best forestry practices
  • Maintain accurate records of harvested and translocated trees, including species, size, condition, and locations
  • Collect, manage, and analyse forestry data including tree inventory, survival rates, and site conditions to support reporting and decision-making.
  • Maintain records of Rendeavour Kenya projects forestry sites, including conducting site visits to assess security, health status, and overall conditions.
  • Coordinate execution of greenfield forestry restoration projects.
  • Implement restoration ecology practices, including invasive species identification, control, and replacement with suitable indigenous or site-appropriate species.
  • Survey trees close to structures and infrastructure for proactive risk management and maintenance.
  • Work closely with environmental officers, contractors, and site teams during planning and execution of forestry operations.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Forestry, Environmental Conservation, or a related field
  • At least 7 years’ experience in forestry operations, including tree harvesting, log/posts value chains, management, pruning, and translocation
  • Knowledge of indigenous and ornamental tree species
  • Practical knowledge of forestry tools and equipment operation, planning, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of pest and disease identification, prevention, and control in forestry systems
  • Practical understanding of stump treatment techniques and post-harvest site management
  • Experience in forestry data collection, monitoring, and reporting (use of digital tools is an added advantage)
  • Ability to work outdoors and handle physically demanding tasks with dynamic teams
  • Certifications in Health and Safety will be an added advantage
