Responsibilities
The Hazardous Cargo Inspector / Certifier will be responsible for the management, handling, certification, and oversight of hazardous material (HM), hazardous waste (HW), medical waste, and other regulated waste (ORW) operations. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Supervising and overseeing operations related to hazardous waste management, including HM, HW, ORW, and Medical Waste in compliance with Diego Garcia Final Governing Standards (DGFGS) and the Contractor’s accepted Discarded HM/HW/ORW Management Implementation Plan.
- Conducting and ensuring the completion of initial and annual refresher training for all hazardous material handlers, waste disposal technicians, shippers, and transporters.
- Managing the collection, packaging, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials and excess hazardous waste, ensuring safety and compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
- Operating and overseeing the Hazardous Waste Storage Area (HWSA), Satellite Hazardous Waste Accumulation Points (SHWAPs), and Hazardous Material Minimization (HAZMIN) Reissue Center, ensuring safe and compliant operations.
- Certifying outgoing shipments of hazardous cargo in accordance with federal and military hazardous cargo transportation regulations.
- Preparing and maintaining hazardous cargo documentation to ensure accurate identification, packaging, and labeling of hazardous materials in line with industry and regulatory standards.
- Performing inspections, audits, and quality control checks of HW/HM operations to ensure adherence to safety standards and compliance with official policies and procedures.
- Investigating incidents involving hazardous materials or waste, determining root causes, and implementing corrective measures.
- Remaining current with hazardous waste and materials training, including initial and biennial recertifications authorized through: Naval School of Physical Distribution Management, Oakland, CA. School of Military Packaging Technology, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.
Qualifications
- At least five (5) years of documented experience in hazardous materials, hazardous waste, medical waste, or other regulated waste management, handling, collection, transportation, or disposal.
- At least five (5) years of documented experience in operating hazardous material or waste facilities, including HWSA and HAZMIN Reissue Centers.
- Certification to inspect and certify outgoing hazardous cargo shipments obtained through initial and biennial refresher training. Authorized training includes: Naval School of Physical Distribution Management, Oakland, CA. School of Military Packaging Technology, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.
- Strong knowledge of hazardous material and waste management standards, including applicable DGFGS regulations.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally. Passport should be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
- Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain requirements for the duration of deployment.

- At least five (5) years of documented experience in hazardous materials, hazardous waste, medical waste, or other regulated waste management, handling, collection, transportation, or disposal.
- At least five (5) years of documented experience in operating hazardous material or waste facilities, including HWSA and HAZMIN Reissue Centers.
- Certification to inspect and certify outgoing hazardous cargo shipments obtained through initial and biennial refresher training. Authorized training includes: Naval School of Physical Distribution Management, Oakland, CA. School of Military Packaging Technology, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.
