Key Accountabilities:
The Head of Flight Operations’ responsibilities include:
- Manage the company’s activities in accordance with the Company Operations Manual
- Be responsible for management and the overall direction and supervision of Flight Operations and the development of policy governing these functions and ensure that all such operations, under all licenses and certificates held by the company, shall be conducted in accordance with the general and specific policies and instructions contained in the Operation Manual, as approved by KCAA
- Be responsible for the control of operations and operational standards of all aircraft operated by the company
- Identify and coordinate functions which impact the operational control of the aircraft (e.g. Maintenance, crew scheduling, load control, equipment scheduling)
- Supervise and organize the manning and efficiency of the following: –
- Flight Operations
- Cabin Safety
- Crew Scheduling and Rostering
- Training programs
- Overall responsibility for the training of Pilots which will include:
- Pilots Simulator Training
- Pilots Ground Courses
- Pilots Initial Training
- Be responsible for writing and updating the Company Operations Manual
- Supervise the production and amendment of the Company Operations Manual
- Liaise with the regulatory authorities on all matters concerning Flight Operations including any variations to the Air Operator Certificate (AOC)
- Liaise with any external agencies which may affect operations, including any variations to the Air Operator Certificate
- Ensure that the operations are conducted in accordance with current regulations, standards and policy
- Ensure that Crew Scheduling complies with flight and duty time regulations, and that all crew members are kept informed of any changes to the regulations and standards
- Be responsible for the receipt and action of any aeronautical information affecting the safety of flight
- Be responsible for the dissemination of aircraft safety information both internal and external in conjunction with the Safety Management System
- Be responsible for and ensure that an approved Operational Security Program is in place and that all Operational Personnel trained in accordance with the Company Operations Manual
- Be responsible for the qualifications of flight and cabin crews
- Be responsible for the maintenance of a current operations library
- In your absence, delegate all responsibilities for operational duties to another qualified individual, except that the knowledge requirements for the position of Director of Flight Operations be demonstrated by the assignee to the management of the company
- Perform all your duties to the best of your ability and to the standards stipulated by the Company
Education and Experience
Education Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management, Aeronautical Engineering, or a related field.
- Valid Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) with relevant ratings for operated aircraft
- A valid Class 1 Medical certificate is standard for roles involving active flight duties or high-level safety oversight.
Experience Required
- Alteast 10 to 15+ years of experience in aviation. Seniority and a proven track record in flight operations or auditing (e.g., IOSA audit certification) are highly preferred
- Must possess a full understanding of Kenya Civil Aviation Authority regulations and safe operating practices as documented in the company’s manual(s) to no less than extend of her/his responsibilities.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Strong leadership, strategic planning, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to focus, work under pressure and make aviation decisions to ensure the best and safest patient outcome
- High level of integrity
- Instructor/Examiner for Simulator training will be an added advantage
- Deep understanding of safety regulations (SMS), operational control, and compliance.
- Deep understanding of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and the Kenya Civil Aviation Regulations (KCARs).
- Ability to make critical aviation safety decisions under high pressure.
- Proficiency in English (ICAO Level 4 or higher) for effective interaction with stakeholders like the KCAA and Air Traffic Control.
